So you wanna catch a kingfish on fly?

A kingfish on fly.

Even a small one will knock your socks off. Their dogged fighting style transmits back through the fly line direct to your hand and fingers as you battle with the one to one ratio. Luckily the soft fly rod allows the kingfish to fight back a bit, and usually, they are not as tired when you finally get to release time. Gentle on the fish, fly fishing is true sport.

Garrick season with GT Adventures, based on the beaches of the fish fantastic KZN North Coast – is on right now! The garrick stick around right into November, with the main bite going on right now.

It’s been consistent and spread out this year, as in there were no real days so far, where the garrick all went mad at the same time! Whenever this happens, anyone with a mullet can get a garrick. Resulting in many, many fish being taken in one day.

That’s not garrick fishing!

Stalking the channels, gulleys, points, ledges and bays…on foot with your guide, who knows every crevice. Fly rod in hand. Or spinning stick if you prefer. Matched tackle. Hundreds of hours of preparation in the bank. Releasing your fish alive and well. Now that’s garrick fishing.

The Coastal Living Bru Food and Wine Exhibition (July 1-3) returns to La Montagne Resort in Ballito and promises to be a smorgasbord of sensory experiences. Coastal Living Bru forms part of the Mr Price Pro Ballito, an international surfing competition and beach and lifestyle festival (June 30 to July 6) that offers families plenty of fun in the sun with activities like extreme sports, beach action, a surfing competition, free music concerts and retail delights.

The extremely popular, “Fleur Du Cap So You think you can cook Ballito Style?” returns for another tightly contested battle between some of KZN’s best professional and amateur chefs. Eight teams will test their culinary and creative skills to produce a mouthwatering dish combining mystery box ingredients with one of the five elements of fire, water, wood, metal, or earth. The tough panel of celebrity judges will decide which teams proceed through the two elimination rounds (July 1 and 2) to the final round on July 3 to win the coveted title of Mr Price Pro Ballito Chef and the grand prize.

27kg Prodigal Son (Cobia) by Ryan Berrry.

23kg Yellowfin Tuna on a shore dive by Royd Williams who also bagged a 27kg cuda a few weeks back.

2 big dagas at Umhlanga in the shallows…one was 28kg!

For a fantastically eery experience, log onto Ocean Global Shark Tracker and see what a few Great Whites are doing right now. As of yesterday, Maddox, a 2000lb monster, was casually heading into the Maputo Bay area. Brenda Fassie and Louise were cruising the coast just south of Inhambane, a bunch of whites are swimming about in Zululand…and for those of you living and swimming in the Cape – wow! An amazing concentration of sharks hang out in the Southern Cape waters…check it out…!

Another success story is about a shark called Success, a 3500 pounder – he swam across from deep Cape Town to past Maputo and across to Madagascar in 6 weeks!
