8 May 2025 Durban Conditions Sunrise Timelapse: Another Perfect Day…

Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper in Durban has been creating pieces of art recently. With his camera! If you have been watching The Sardine News show on YouTube, you will know and appreciate what I am talking about…

The timelapses!

Not only are these magnificent efforts portraying Durban for what it is – a paradise of some sort – but they also reveal far more than we ever thought. About the ocean and atmospheric conditions at that moment. The sped-up footage betrays all that the normal pace eye can not see at all.

A big thank you to Adam. You can show your appreciation by popping over to his Township Hyper Facebook page. This is also where Adam runs the promotional side of things at the huge shop and keeps his shoppers up-to-date with relevant goings-on in and around Durban.

Click on over to TownShip Hyper on Facebook, right HERE!

And watch the report right here…

Good morning aye shot Adam
that was the best
most prettiest time lapse we’ve done so far
Durban is paradise really is the most wondrous place
okay and the ocean is absolutely marvelous today
if you can go you must go boy
this is the conditions that we’ve been waiting for
for so long these perfect days cheese keep us alive
the dreams of these days so get out there if you can
alright let’s start up with the moon
there’s quite a big moon 84%
that’s great news for the impending possible
maybe sardine embarkation up the coast
so with Gary Hook reckons they gotta have a full moon
this is the first full moon that’s come along
since the time that we’ve been talking about sardines
way too early I acknowledge that
way too early that we actually studying the conditions
that the sardines need to come up here
and that’s why
I mentioned the hot water in the beginning
because that Agulhas current is screaming again
that will make the counter current stronger
and we’re stepping closer to the sardines bit by bit
there’s hardly any waves
so surfing I’m not sure about but diving and fishing
you gotta go eh 18 to 24 degrees stable atmosphere
1 0 1 8
light on shore in the off
light offshore in the morning
and light on shore in the afternoon
as per usual low tide in the morning
the tides are still moving quite a lot 92 minutes
that is quite a big jump and then high tide
13 forty eight and low tide in the afternoon 19:41
again rad
we’ll catch you in the next report
don’t forget to like and subscribe and maybe even join
Ciao Ciao

Ian at The Block – 9am

Good morning Sean Good Morning everyone
Ian here coming from the Port Shepstone river mouth
Umzimkulu what a beautiful day today
we’re on the low tides going out
I think it’s the first day of spring
if I’m not mistaken um
so we have a pretty much of a very low tide today
uh this morning and then obviously
tide turning towards the afternoon lunch time
as you see it’s looking quite awesome
little bit of a the swell here n there
but more than like an ankle tapper
but the fishing conditions are superb
a little bit of a
offshore blowing down here at The Block
at the moment believe the wind kinda gusts about 10 Ks
today during the course o the day
I think
it’ll make much difference on the sea conditions
but yeah what a lovely
lovely morning here at the block
there’s some guys trying their luck
believe the guys got better fish here
last night and so yeah hoping for a epic day today
I’m here at the office Guys
tight lines and have an awesome day stay safe

Perfect Day in May

Perfect Day in May

Perfect Day in May: it’s on! For fishermen, surfers and divers! Small swell, hardly a breeze, sunny skies, warm water that’s almost clean…! And there are gamefish jumping all over the place.

Surfing

Durban is really small as the 1.5m south south east swell tries to wrap around the piers and get in there. There is still not much tide, just over half a metre or so.

The south and north coasts will fare better with this swell direction.

Diving

After many near misses, hopefully today we will see some shore diving from the spearos. Who have been having a great time – but only out deep! Here is the Bear Report from yesterday…

Fishing

Here we have Alan at Shelly Beach this morning, thank you Alan!

Ian Logie’s exciting report of gamefish jumping around after the freshly arrived sprats got many people out onto the rocks to try throw a spoon the distance. You need a good cast to get to the snoek but they are there right now and anyone with a farcaster is in with a throw.

Ian, yesterday…

Humpback Whales in Durban Already for Sardine Run 2025

Humpback Whales in Durban Already 28 April 2025

Humpback Whales in Durban Already for Sardine Run 2025

Humpback Whales in Durban Already for Sardine Run 2025: after all the excitement of the Durban Skiboat Club Festival, we then had a brace of humpback whales enter the fray.

The following diagram I got whilst working with the erstwhile Dr. Oz Goffman, as he maps out the family trees and DNA sequences of these mighty ocean roamers. As you can see, there are distinct separate populations hanging down south. Dr. Oz knows most of these guys by name, and he has been tailing them around the southern and Indian oceans for decades.

What you can deduce from this diagram and its relevance today is that these whales do not necessarily have to go to Hermanus first to start their migration up north to Mozambique and Madagascar. Nope, they can hit the coast anywhere, coming in at a square ninety degrees to the coast.

Interestingly, Durban got them first this year! They must have been reading that Sardine News and getting way too excited way too early in the game!

These whales are on a migration up this way to give birth and nurture their young in the safety of the bland tropical waters as opposed to the predator-filled southern oceans where they normally hang out. Adults teaching their whale pups to smash the water with their fins and tails can be observed through the delightful wintertime time that the humpbacks are here for.

But they also eat sardines! Read all about that right here. Or watch the movie right here…featuring sardine aficionado Kevin Touhy right on the sardine scene down in the deep Transkei Wild Coast. Get in touch with Kevin to check in to his lovely cottages and rondavels over this coming sardine season. I am heading down there soon too!

Here is the WINNING Fish for DSBC Festival 2025

Gareth Brocket 29kg Winning Fish DSBC Festival

Here is the WINNING Fish for DSBC Festival 2025

Here is the WINNING Fish for DSBC Festival 2025: and it’s a wrap! The well attended festival once again produced the fish and a 29 kg couta by Gareth Brockett took top honour and the boat!

Winner Gareth Brockett with his almost 30kg croc couta!

27th of April 2025

And it’s the final day of the Durban Skiboat Club
Festival competition
Durban Each year very cool event
I’ve fished it a few times
I never came anywhere
anyway first prize over half a million
not exactly sure of the details
but I’ll put them on the screen here when I find them
cool hey
so who’s gonna win well
I don’t know because I put this video together now
and we’ll get the results later
and then I’ll stick them in
and then we’ll publish the video
then you’ll know who won so in the meantime
all I got for you is day 1
beautiful Natal winter unbelievable conditions
just pure off shores blowing
just the most beautiful scene
thank you Adam Kamdar
for capturing this so nicely and creatively l
like you did anyway
the only challenge was really the water
tainted with that runoff from the floods
from the days before little bit of brown going in there
all manners of other things too
but the brown is the problem
but some boats took up the challenge
and found the water and they found a fish
some big fish weighed well
I saw one particularly nice fish
alright day 2 today wow
Natal in winter
you just can’t beat it when it plays the game
we’re not quite in winter yet
but April’s always got a bad reputation for rain
don’t plan your holidays in April
go in may rather May is the best month around here
but yeah day 2
equally lush and once again
Adam captured the the
the scene so beautifully from his vantage point
but now we wait until this afternoon or this evening
whenever it is when they announce the winner
then I’ll put the winner’s name in here
and hopefully a picture and we will have the results
in the meantime thanks for watching

Ahah and the winner is…

Gareth Brockett

okay don’t forget to like and subscribe
maybe join the channel
if you want to know everything about the sardines
but lekker thank you for watching Ciao Ciao
