Sardine Run 2025 Explained by Kevin in Qora

Sardine Run 2025 Explained by Kevin

Sardine Run 2025 Explained by Kevin in Qora

Sardine Run 2025 Explained by Kevin in Qora: thank you Kevin!

Morning chaps
this is Kevin at Qora Mouth
just north of Mazeppa Bay in the Southern Transkei
well well
well the sardine run is definitely underway
netting going on already in Southern K
Z N started with Port Edward yesterday
and they’re moving up the coast a bit
uh we saw all the netting boats
standing around at Saint Mike’s
this morning which was a little bit north of uh
Port Edward
and they’re just looking and waiting and watching
um nets went out this morning at sandspit
and so those sardines are actually moving up the coast
albeit a little bit slowly
but that’s okay
there’s lots more sardines coming behind them
and I think you know
if we if we just discuss what’s happened so far
we have hindsight right now
2020 vision um
the sardines were down off east London as we know
then they moved to Cintsa
and then they disappeared off the radar
now normally
every year
I get the sards coming straight past the front of me
a kilometre out I saw nothing
the only thing I had to go on was the gannets
because every morning
the gannets leave their roost wherever they were
and they travel up the coast or down the coast uh
because they know where the sards are
and they were all booking it north of me
so what actually happened here
is that the sardines jumped out deep
because there was warm water in front of them
and they moved past me
probably out right where the continental shelf is
they probably wouldn’t go off the shelf
but our shelf here is about 19 KS out
so they were out there deep and they moved past
and yeah they’ve come in at KZN
strange how things work out
so what we can expect now chaps
is that these uh sardines are gonna move up the coast
and there’s lots more backing them up
I’m seeing lots of birds going north still
so there’s still lots of sardines out deep
we had a big shoal that moved through east London
about three days ago and that’s out deep
it’s uh
they’re moving in a very
very low current and they’re moving north cool
so um yeah
that’s what we got guys that’s what we got for now
but um
let’s keep watching and um
let’s hope it’s a bumper year for the netters there
please just another reminder
keep well clear of the nets
if you’re there in the morning watching them
um it’s dangerous work and it’s their job and um
tempers get a little bit flared
if the public get a little bit too close
so give them their space uh
watch from a distance and um
keep it real let’s have fun cheers

That’s all for the Sardine Run 2025 Explained by Kevin!

SARDINES in the TRANSKEI, UFOs, KZN Conditions and more aerial surveillance

UFOs vs Sardines

SARDINES in the TRANSKEI, UFOs, KZN Conditions and more aerial surveillance

SARDINES in the TRANSKEI, UFOs, KZN Conditions and more aerial surveillance: it wasn’t only us that got caught by sardine surprise today. The gannets also hit a miss and were nowhere to be seen. A rare occurrence given that the gannets absoliuteoy live for these tasty fishies.

“Well that sure looks like sardines to me
thank you very much to the okes who sent that in
so we
I chat it to the Bear and he verifies that conditions
etcetera
and the Kevin says he’s quite convinced as well
so we decided to give it a stamp of approval
and
say that there are definitely sardines in the Transkei
Umtata Mouth and they’re definitely moving north
I don’t know how come the gannets lost them
ha ha ha they’re gonna find them later today
it’s gonna be a bit of a show boy OK
lekker thank you

UFOs vs Sardines

UFOs vs. Sardines: Well, there has been zero news from the sardine spy network since Kevin was tracking a large shoal on its way to Hole in the Wall and Port St Johns from his base in the very southern Transkei.

Aerial contributor Rogan Brent was up in the air in that area all day yesterday and here are the fruits of his efforts.

Big South Swells on the March in May #kzn #ocean #conditions #sardinerun2025

Big South Swells on the March in May #kzn #ocean #conditions #sardinerun2025

BIG South Swells Marching In May: That was a really decent cold front – whipping up quite a big open ocean swell. That doesn’t ever really get in at Durban or even the north and south coasts.

This big old rolling swell is angled parallel to the coast. Not so good for surfers at all. But marvelous for the ‘Surfing Sardines’. You can watch that video by Kevin Touhy by following the thumbnail in the end screen section of the video.

GoDive Following The Sardines to Cintsa Today

Following the Sardines Big SW Coming

GoDive Following The Sardines to Cintsa Today

GoDive Following The Sardines to Cintsa Today: the sardines are on the move. They are still busy congregating and as we move north, tighter and tighter shoals and baitballs will form. As the predators line up and set their ambush strategies. Lotsa co-operation between the sharks, dolphins and gannets as these main players jockey and jostle the sardines into order.

Over to GoDive Dive Master checking in with Elton…following the sardines today…

“How’s it Elton
um so winds picking up today
um I don’t think we’re gonna
gonna launch today um
so we’ll be doing uh
wheel bearings brakes
everything get the cars and trailers
uh ready for
for Cintsa um yeah
it was it was a lekka PE trip
but uh
just wish we had some stable bait balls
um yeah
sardines were quite scattered um
I think going up to Cintsa is gonna be a good idea
have them funneled funneled into a smaller search
area that would help a lot as well um
but yeah we had some brydes whales uh
humpback dolphins uh
common dolphins bottlenose dolphins and uh
actually first time that I’ve ever seen uh
two pilot whales um
so we’ve spoken to the other guys around here
sometimes they they do come into the into the bay um
so yeah my first time um and I’m pretty sure quite of a
quite a few of our clients
first time ever seeing one as well um
so yeah that was quite awesome but I do think uh
since it’s gonna be a bit better um
just hoping for some
some stable bait balls that stay inside instead of the
the kind of scattered deeper sardines
so just a quick update thanks man”

Thanks for the update, team, and we are so looking forward to hearing about your first dive in the Cintsa area!
