It’s just after 8?a.m. on the Wild?Coast, and Steve from Wild?View?Cottages is standing on the dunes at Coffee?Bay, watching the ocean explode with life.

“Sardines are all over the place,” he says, his voice barely audible over the roar of the surf and the cries of thousands of birds diving in frenzy.

The Sardine?Run?2026 has officially arrived in Coffee?Bay. The water is alive — shimmering shoals pushing north, whales breaching offshore, and gannets diving flat?out in every direction. Yesterday there were only scattered pockets of birds, but this morning the scene has transformed into a full?scale marine carnival.

A brisk south?westerly wind is blowing, pushing the cooler water and the sardines northward — straight toward Durban. Steve predicts that the next few days will bring massive activity along the KZN coast as the shoals advance.

“What a day to be alive,” he laughs, panning his camera across the chaos of wings and waves.
