Freedom O Clock Estuary Mouth Fishing Spot
Surfing
Freedom O Clock looks out over the infamous Mdumbi Point. Fickle. But when it fires, it really shows off. Endless lines. Hollow sections. And perfect offshores painting the warm clear water to glass.
Surfing kit is available for rent. If you would like surf lessons or a surfing guide to take you out there, this can be organised too.
Fishing
When you stay at Freedom O Clock, you are surrounded by fish. Hemmed in. Trapped! In any direction you go, there are amazingly beautiful and pristine fishing spots. It is very easy to catch 5 different species in a session.
Staple diet for everyone around here is deliciously fresh shad. When they bite, anyone can catch one!
Or you could be hardcore and lob a big bait out over the backline for a blue. Or a black. Or a silver. Or a kob!
The gulleys are so much fun. Take your scratching kit or ultra-light and clamber over those rocks until you find a nice hole. There are so many!
The estuary is infamous and has a formidable family of rock salmon standing ready to take you out. Rather target the garrick, kingfish and grunter…at least they give you a chance!
Local fishing guides are available, for a fee. Aside from helping gather fresh live bait, having all their local knowledge along with you – is fantastico!
Diving
Snorkeling in the estuary is real safe and fun. And the many inshore bays and channels are easy and safe too.
The more hardcore can brave the Wild Coast ocean and swim right out in front. Spearfishing is practised here and yes, there are sharks around.
Accommodation
Freedom has three of the coolest rooms with views. Straight out over the surf break, the river mouth, and the estuary.
There is the “rondie”. A spacious traditional Xhosa-style hut that is deployed as the dorm.
Below that level, but still with the views, is the picturesque and green campsite.
Communal kitchen and ablutions make sure everyone gets to know everyone!
The best time to go down into the Transkei Wild Coast is most definitely winter time. Or the dry season to be more accurate. Becasue even in winter, we have the most beautiful weeks of weather. Interrupted by the weekly cold fronts that last a day or three. And then back to the high-pressure good weather again. This changeover between low-pressure and high-pressure systems is what makes everything tick around here.
