Fatimas Nest Backpackers in Tofo

Fatimas Nest Backpackers in Tofo: Fatima’s Nest is where it all started in Tofo. Bonfires on the beach. Late nights. Early mornings. Surfing. Diving. Fishing all day. Fatima’s today retains that vibe and over its three decades of fun in the sun, this has not changed a bit.

Tofo

This is a multi-faceted destination. The clear and warm blue water of the Indian Ocean is ever-inviting. The weather is fantastic year-round (just watch out for the odd cyclone and rainy stints). The people here are known as Boa da Gente (the good people). Humour thrives here. There is not a smack of racism anywhere. There are a lot of cops in Mozambique. Good or bad, it certainly retains order.

Scuba diving on the magnificent reefs in the crystal clear waters out front of Fatimas Nest is the main attraction. And what brings the most tourists to town. Tofo and Barra waters are world-famous for their Manta Rays and Whale Sharks. Interactions are common. You can also take an Ocean Safari that does not require all that gear and training.

Surfing in the bay at Tofo is ideally suited to beginners. This is the very best place to learn to surf. Small gentle waves roll down a picture-perfect sand and rock pointbreak all the way to a fun little shorebreak. These shorebreaks get better and better as you go with the current to the north. There are peaks and sand points that vary through the massive 4 meter tides. You just got to be on your toes and you will catch those waves. And we do remember that whilst you are here, you are within striking distance of scoring barra when that dream superbank comes alive every now and then. It actually breaks far more often than you might think.

Fishing is what I came here for. Dreams of warm conditions and endless species of gamefish. And although we get some quiet times and some rough weather to contend with, the fishing is generally ok here. There are even a few spots that you can fish from the rocks out into deep ocean. Like just past the surfing spot Tofinho around the corner. There are huge bonefish waiting to be picked on. Milkfish. Springer. Kingfish. Queenfish. Fly fishing world records are for the taking here.

Firstly, camping is the main attraction (this is the biggest campsite in the area). Fatima’s camping area is huge. Loads of space. Right at the beach. It is kitted with a full outside kitchen. And hot water ablutions. Plug points. Lighting. For overlanders in their own vehicles, Fatima’s is perfect for you.

The en-suite double rooms are next. Beach cabanas. Cute and rustic.

Then across the way, past the famous Fatima’s Nest Beach Restaurant, are really big dorm rooms. Mozzie nets.

And finally we have the bungalows. These are semi-ensuite and there are some without bathrooms. There are more ablutions here, and another really cool outside kitchen and eating area. This place is a lot of fun. You can hang out and be social. Or like me, enjoy the peace a quiet of the ocean waves and my little bungalow.
