Starting small…

This fish was taken on a 1/4 ounce head with a 3-inch plastic. Tiny. The fish ate the small lure just down from kob hole in the Mzimvubu which is the main Port St. Johns river. Angler Sean Calitz got himself into the argument of his life with this 25kg kob on his new kayak. And on a tiny little 6kg spinning outfit. This is the lure right here…

At the other end of the scale, we have the overweighted 2-ounce Silver Bullet bomber. That can fly straight into the strongest north easterly you can find.

You will most likely find that you will be using the half-ounce and one-ounce guys the most.

Fishing Port St. Johns with lures

Is really so much more productive and fun than live bait. And those guys fishing their livebaits across the whole river actually really can get in the way! If you are lucky enough to be on a boat…you need only troll with a few of these guys out the back. First one at 6 metres, and then the back one at about 15m. The rest in between. Hawaiian Diamond configuration. If you are fishing from the shore, that’s great fun too. The action is in front of Ferry Point and Agate Terrace these days. Just cast 100 times. Then do it again. You will get your fish.

Garrick vs Kob

Kob take a slow deliberate bait near the bottom. They feed much like bass. In that they need some enticing. They can be there and see your lure 100 times and not bite. Then on the 101st cats…bang! Now, if all of a sudden, the surf erupts in front of you with hell-crazy-ass garrick on the feed…all you need to do is crank that MYDO as fast as you can. It comes up upon the surface and behaves just like a proper surface lure. You don’t need to change to a plug or anything at all. Just crank! The other species like rock salmon, perch and kingfish, can be hunted way up river in the hot spots. Cast at structure. Rocks. Fallen trees. Use the smaller lures for this job. The bigger ones are more for the surf zone really. Change your retrieve with every throw. Until you can work out what is working and go with that action. Please visit the MYDO International website for overseas orders.
