A local fishing guide available to assist and direct you at all times.

Fishing from the jetty in front of the lodge at the slipway is the staple diet. Ox-eye tarpon have captured our imagination recently (click here to watch the video)  to out shadow the kingfish, rock salmon, grunter, perch, barbel…that we hunt most of the time. Sometimes even shad and other amazing bait species (bonies, razorbellies) move in making things even more interesting.

Jackpot fish like garrick and big salmon have been consistently encountered lately, with one Zambezi caught at Spiller’s Wharf on a livebait, and another taking a shore anglers perch and biting it clean in half! And we caught another flicking a lure up at the Ghost House! Watch that one here.

Chucking a sardine head out there with a light running sinker puts you in the running for just about any and every fish big enough to get the bait in it’s mouth. Grunter, rock salmon, perch, salmon (square-tailed kob, daga, snapper), and flagtails (flatheads) are all up for some juicy sardine blood and guts in a crunchy hard coating. Live bait is easy to get and almost always results in a proper strike…and then the lure fishing… sea pike (pick handle barracuda), kingfish (big eye, yellowfin, giant trevally), oxe-eye tarpon, garrick, springer…artificials have been proving amazingly successful as we move into winter clean water conditions.

Modus operandi

Is to base at the Umzimkulu Marina, where we will fish plenty…and then use the 26ft river cruiser to access the inaccessible fishing spots up and down the estuary area. The boat will also get us to dinner at Fish-0n-the-River, and further down to The Block, and the famous rock ‘n surf beach…The Sandspit.

If the weather and conditions are favourable, it is possible to hitch a ride out to the deep sea grounds on our sportfishing boat, The Niteshift for a surcharge of R1850 per trip.

Great for corporate getaways and team building! The Umzimkulu Ambush!
