The Sardine Run comes to Durban

25 July 2024 The Sardine Run comes to Durban

The Sardine Run comes to Durban

The Sardine Run comes to Durban: a flurry of sardine activity in the last 24 hours leads to this jam-packed report about sardines being on the Durban beachfront right now.

Even though the water is still a toasty 23 degrees Celsius, it looks like some of our visiting sardines have had enough waiting for the Durban water temperature to drop. And are now playing the game.

The first report from the beach came in at 7h00…right from South Beach.

07h00

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StOQPOK6e2E?rel=0
7am saw Adam on the beach at Addington where the action started this morning

07h30

A few minutes later and another excellent clip of a net being deployed. With divers in action and the usual sweat and tears by the crew hauling that heavy net in and out all the time.

07h45

More boats have launched by this time and the first net is almost on the beach.

What’s inside?

07h45 and more netting boats are on the hunt

Gallery from yesterday

Yesterday’s lovely net on the beach at South Beach in Durban yielded a proper haul of real Natal sardines. Not sure of the price at this late stage of the game. But if you live in Durban and have been waiting and waiting for the sards to come around that corner then this is your chance to strike.

Sardines netted at uShaka, Cold front hits KZN

24 July 2024 Cold Front hits KZN

Cold front hits KZN Today, Sardines netted at uShaka

Cold front hits KZN Today: a really handsome-looking cold front has beaten down the beastly-easterly and is swooping down on KZN today. The first gusts come in at a magnificent WSW angle and the dropping tide all morning is sure to produce some epic surfing conditions.

Sardines netted at uShaka!

Over to Adam in Durban…

The swell is gonna be building the entire morning so early would be a great time to be flying a kite. Check this recent video of Graeme Coetzee deploying this traditional anti-drone method of fishing to the wonderful result of a Prodigal Son weighing in at a muscular 8kgs. These fish fight. Aka Cobia. And they are delicious!

You need a west wind and a long point to fly a kit for gamefish effectively

Kite-fishing is a lot of work! But the harmonious way it deploys the offshore wind to get your bait out just makes the whole scene so natural. Unlike those noisy drones. That also leave line running in the water where no one can see it. So dangerous to spearos, propellor washers, marine life and even bathers and surfers. The kite is highly visible as is the float marker. Very considerate. Fun to watch and assist.

Bazaruto Winter Gamefish

We are slowly moving through the winter gamefish flurry up in Bazaruto and surrounds. It has been really goos as can be seen in the following video update.

The big momma season is just around the corner. The wind blasting onshore through the islands today is what brings more big fish in each year. So we just got to sit these big blows out. Get some maintenance and rigging done. Patience.

In the meantime, we are warming up to be reporting from the fleet this year and every year, in the following format…

Sardines and Shad

Cold fronts weirdly enough warm the water. Even more than it is now sitting at 22 or 23 in most places. Neither shad nor sardines favour these bathwater conditions. What happens after the cold front is magical weather again. And then in a few more days another even more handsome cold front comes charging in from the south all over again. So I dunno what could possibly cause an upwelling of cold water to occur in the near future. Prospects are not good for sardines and shad right now.

But for most all other fish we like to catch, it’s gonna be really good over the next few days. And especially. Nights.

22 July 2024 Where are the Shad Biting Today?

22 July 2024 Where are the Shad Biting Today

22 July 2024 22 July 2024 Where are the Shad Biting Today?

22 July 2024 22 July 2024 Where are the Shad Biting Today?: Good morning and welcome to a magnificent fishing Monday! The morning’s news will be updated here throughout the day…

Shad

Check out the MYDO Shad Pack right HERE!

Sardines

Are the reason the shad have moved away from some areas? There are still many sardines hanging about on the KZN South Coast. But they are not inshore. They are holding in colder pockets of water out in deeper water. And this is seemingly where some of the shad have gone too.

The absolute shad biting frenzy we recently experienced has wound down to an idle. One, one…all over the place. But no intense concentration in any one place like last week.

The water off Durban averages 21 to 22 degrees today. Heading towards sardine temperature after a long run of 23 to 24 degrees. Sardine temperature is down at 19 or so. They come from cold water.

Gamefish

This is a great time to be targeting big garrick, kob and snoek. These shallow-water predators are hunting up and down the backline every day. Sometimes those big kob are right in the shallows, like one metre.

Garrick also chase the shad right to the beach. You just got to have enough power if you hook one by mistake whilst shad fishing.

You will need some casting distance for the snoek. But they have been coming well within reach this year with many trophies taken from the side.

All the kingfish species are here too now. Some great GT catches were featured this year. There have been a few queenfish too!

If you really want to know what is going on with the gamefish in KZN, check out The Bear’s Master Watermen Channel over on YouTube. Clike HERE to get there.

Conditions

Another superfluous Monday morning in KZN. Light offshore winds. 22 Degrees water. Calm seas. Go fishing! Today is epic.

21 July 2024 Salad Fish

7am 21 July 2024 Durban early report from the Ocean by Adam Kamdar

7am 21 July 2024 Durban early report from the Ocean by Adam Kamdar: Adam kicks they day off with his 7am report. Right from the ocean out front of Durban’s Golden Mile. And is closely followed by The Bear checking in with a dive and conditions report from The Bluff.

Adam Kamdar checks in from his floating office out off Durban’s Golden Mile.

And then a few minutes later…

21 July 2024 Salad Fish in the morning
The Salad Fish!

We have another great day of weather and conditions!

The Bear at The Bluff

The Bear sounds apprehensive at the sight of a reasonably solid ground swell bottoming out with the low tide. However, the water is blue. And I am sure that the high tide later is gonna be epic for the divers.

7am The Bear on The Bluff

No sea too rough…

We dive at five!

Shad at Brighton Beach 07h30

The Bear is on patrol on The Bluff and came across this scene at Brighton Beach this morning

More reports

Will trickle in throughout the day. Check back with each notification for another update.
