It’s Dorado Time again!
It’s dorado time again!: as the rains start to form the infamous halocline all along our KZN coastline. In fact, these fish are gonna pop up from Mozambique right into the Eastern Cape and beyond. Right now the factory is busy with a big order for Mydos for dorado time all the way down in East London. Where these guys paddle their kayaks a solid 25kms in a day, trolling Mydos and getting hounded by dorado, and my best friends the wahoo and the sharks. That just bite straight through the nylon traces!
Dorado Time
Dorado – this wily airborne and acrobatic fox- will mess with your bait and toy with your nerves. And then all of a sardine, the whole ocean lights up and the dorado goes into attack mode. Smashing your bait and then literally fighting over it.
It just takes that first strike, and next thing, the whole ocean around you is busting up in technicolour as the shoal goes mad.
Catching Dorries…
I have filmed many dorado attacks from underwater and have posted them for all to see, right here. That is a clip of a live shad being obliterated by a hungry shoal of dorado. The shad was quite big, and it was fished with a single hook and a special glass-like float.

The video discussed a tad further…
The most obvious takeaway from watching these videos is the fact that no dorado, ever, in any place, will go down the water column, to get a bait. Anything deeper than a couple metres is not going to get chowed.
Then, and this is important, during the strike, the dorado latches onto the bait any old how it can. It then has to speed away from the other guys who now are also all lit up and ready to play. The dorado grabs the bait, and as soon as he is kind of cleaar of his jeallous mates, he turns that bait around in his mouth and swallows it head first!
So you feel a knock – the dorado has come in close and takes a whack at the bait with his head (this is why so many dorado are hooked in the top of the head when fishing with rapalas). Then one of them grabs the bait, and speeds off. You ratchet screaming. Do not touch the drag. Let that fish get away from his mates. You will feel all of a sudden that he slows down and the rod makes a few weird movements. This is him turning that bait around in his mouth, and swallowing it.
Now you can put the brakes on and hold tight.
