Chilly Monday in Durban KZN by Adam Kamdar 9 September 2024
Chilly Monday in Durban KZN by Adam Kamdar 9 September 2024: The first report in today comes from Adam Kamdar from a rather chilled Durban Beachfront. Some brave dudes are out there surfing fun little shore break-type waves. But not too much else it seems is going on today.
Over to Adam…
If you get the chance, pop by Township Hyper and check out the latest Precision grinder rods recently available.
And a quick look at the waves in Durban town today…
Yesterday
Cliff Bamber down in Scottburgh yesterday made this quick report for us too…a great reference as to the progress of our current cold front. This front may be the last real freeze that we might get as we charge into spring weather.
Over to Cliff…yesterday’s chilly report today…
Thank you, Cliff, unlike the weather, your reports are cooking. Please keep it up!
Sightings Map 2024
So we have decided to continue with the 2024 Sardine Sightings Map. Only now we are going to log any and all unique ocean events or marine visitors. Like that seal on the lower south coast last week. Didn’t make the cut yet but we will see what we can do about it.
In the meantime, here is the link to the 2024 Sightings Map.
The Sardine News 2024 Marine Sightings Map
On a chilly day like today, you can visit this map and relive the sardine run right from where it started down in the Cape in May. It has been a remarkably interesting sardine run as the little guys shot out of the gate real early this year. And then had us all guessing as they just kept coming. Day after day. Week after week.
Then that warm water moved and it has stayed warm (bar a few days last week) for 2 months or more. It has hardly dropped below 20 degrees and each time it did, sardines and other baitfish appeared. And then disappeared.
By now, the general consensus is that the sardines are all eaten. Some might have made their way out deeper to a cold patch and went back south with it. There is zero proof of this theory. But generally that water out there is far too warm for sardines. It gets over 26 degrees out there in the Agulhas Current, the sardines would be boiled at that temperature.
We sure hope you got some sardines this season too!
Sardine n Sighting Maps
It has been a fantastic sardine run this memorable 2024. And all the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. This year’s map has been viewed 180,000 times and keeps growing.
Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. This year we started to log more whale and dolphin sightings. And we even had a shipwreck! And a freaking tornado!
These events will from now on be included in the Sardine News Sightings Map for 2024. And on the 1 January 2025, we shall start all over again.
Here are the links to existing and past Sardine Sighting Maps. Great for chilly day research.
