Winter spearfishing KZN is hot as hell

Winter spearfishing hot as hell in KZN

Winter spearfishing is hot as hell

Jason Heyne on the boil after his sailfish shot last week on Aliwal Shoal, reports in with more intel from what goes on under the water. Evidently it’s wahoo, big couta, sailfish and garrick – true winter gamefish here, that are causing all the commotion.

Well the diving conditions this week have been well below average unless you could get on a boat and I dive deeper spots like Aliwal shoal. Plenty wahoo around with the odd king mackerel and sailfish coming out. Saturday the swell drops to 1.8m with a North West offshore wind blowing in the morning switching to a moderate south West during the morning. Sunday the south West picks up speed with the swell running at over 2m. So there may be a small gap Saturday morning for a dive.  As always dive safe and straight spears.

Thank you Jason and keep up the good work!

If you want to do some spearfishing this winter, get in touch on umzimkulu@gmail.com and let’s put something together – Mozambique or South Africa – we got it covered.

Jason Heyne get’s his sailfish on Aliwal

Jason Heyne's sailfish shot on Aliwal

Jason Heyne get’s his sailfish on Aliwal

Just in from Jason Heyne down the south coast of KZN, happily reporting his sailfish.

Epic conditions on the shoal today – lost two cracker wahoo – these fish continue to elude me. At the moment the score is Wahoo 6, and me 0. One came in close of deep Scotties and I got a broadside shot in garrick style. Aimed middle and the fish spooked on the trigger so the shot went high and the ‘hoo just shook it off and showed me a zap.

Dave Adworth got well worked over by a 200kg plus black marlin that bust him up proper. Took his gun and everything. Meanwhile his dive partner Chad shot three wahoo from 15kgs to 27kgs.

At 06h30 there were eight boats around us, by 08h00 there were twenty!

But the wahoo still hung around in amongst all the traffic.

Then the fishermen left as they couldnt make any bait, Mark de la Hay and all the other pros scratching their heads.

Then right in the middle of all this I plonked my saily. It went on a grand tail walking show in and around the boats with anglers watching on.

Thanks Jason! Keep up the good work!

Chris Leppan shoots huge couta at Pomene

Chris Leppan and his huge couta at Pomene

Chris Leppan shoots huge couta at Pomene

Watch this cool underwater and highly authentic video shot by Asha Irvine, Chris’ able lady – as Chris puts the spear in a huge couta at Pomene recently.

The fish was deep down, swimming the bottom as Chris descended above and behind to plant the perfect shot. The couta swims off like it would, and Chris gives chase, with Asha right behind him, camera rolling.

The reel gun must have been smoking underwater but luckily it was well spooled and the 32kg fish soon got dragged up kicking and screaming.

Chris’ antics have been nothing more than spectacular…we had to run a series on him to keep up!

More Chris action right here:

Just btw, we somehow have two Chris Leppan’s, and they are both smoking hot anglers…

This is the other Chris Leppan…
