Jason Heyne checking in

A brace of Wahoo on the North Coast

Jason Heyne checking in

Thank you Senor Jason Heyne, for another reliable and entertaining report from under the water…

“The sea conditions have been average this week. North coast averaging 3 to 4m viz and South coast 5 to 12m viz. We have low tide in the mornings this weekend which will make shallow diving uncomfortable with better viz out deeper and less churn. The bigger garrick are putting in an appearance if you have the patience to wait for them. Swell is up Saturday morning with a light West blowing early and dropping off late afternoon. Sunday the north east is set to blow early picking up steadily throughout the morning. So Saturday afternoon on the high tide will be the best option north or south coast. News from the Sodwana comp is that the viz is pea soup and the biggest fish so far is a 28kg GT. As always dive safe and straight spears.”

Enjoy the mug shots…!

Jason Heyne weekly spearfishing report for KZN

Jason Heyne weekly spearfishing report for KZN

Over to Jason Heyne for last weeks spearfishing report for KZN…

“Conditions have been surprisingly good this week with the sea settling nicely on Thursday and Friday and the 1.6m swell predicted didn’t really put in an appearance. Predictions for Saturday look great and there is good viz in the middle south coast area. Sunday a moderate north east is predicted to blow early on the south coast and later on the north coast. Keep looking for those daga salmon and garrick as they are around and the white mussel cracker are definitely shoaling. Far north coast the queen mackerel are about in numbers with some fair size sharks and even Orcas putting in an appearance at Sodwana. Our prizes for the species comp on the 31st of October are shaping up nicely with a pair of freedivers carbon blades with foot pockets, a custom freedivers wetsuit and a night at Mcgintys lodge and boat charter for a day at sodwana lined up! As always dive safe and straight spears. “

Many thanks Jason!

The weeks spearfishing news with Jason Heynes

The weeks spearfishing news with Jason Heynes

From the ever reliable Mr. Jason Heynes…the week underwater, up and down the KZN coastline.

“Sea conditions have been average this week but some big winter fish are putting in an appearance. Big daga salmon on the wrecks and brusher (white musselcracker) in the Durban area. Well done Drew, Ashley, Garret, Markus and Gerhaad on landing great fish this week. The better viz was on the south coast with north reported at 4 to 6m. A cold front has moved in but conditions should improve by Sunday with the south west dropping off Saturday and swell dropping off to 1.4 m come Sunday. As always dive safe and straight spears. ”

Sardines and Garrick: by Jason Heyne

2017 Sardine Report

Sardines and Garrick: by Jason Heyne

Well it’s hard to believe but it’s sardines and garrick in the bay off Durban this week!? And along with the nice garrick being shot, the daga salmon are still eager aswell, coming right into the shallows in some places. Carl Gous got two Greeks off Seapoint in Friday in the heavy seas…and today (Sunday) looks to be a pearler.

A big up to Jason Heyne for compiling this weekly roundup of diving and conditions up and down the KZN coastline.

“August winds are still blowing making north coast undiveable with some viz down lower south coast where garrick and daga salmon are still coming out. The West this week brought some big swell but also some clean water from scottborough to hibberdene today.  Forcast for Saturday looks good with swell dropping to 1.5m and a moderate North easterly blowing in the afternoon dropping the swell more for Sunday to about 1m with a north easterly blowing again in the afternoon. We are having our open Species spearfishing competition on the 31st of October. More details to follow. As always dive safe and straight spears. “

National Garrick Day

Pierre and the Garricks

National Garrick Day

It’s all about the garrick on the lower south coast of KZN, as they are being spotted and shot at, any point a spearo swims out to. They are in shoals and averaging about 8 to 10kg’s and marauding the plentiful shad and other baitfish in the backline.

Pierre and the Garricks
Pierre de Villers from the Cape pilgrims up to the south coast of KZN each year, to get shots like this and to shoot the odd Garrick. Thanks for the pic Pierre!

Carl Gous (as usual), got his two in the bag on Friday, and tussled with three more as the excellent and ruthless fighters tried bending his spear inside out.

But it hasn’t been National Garrick Day yet. This happens on a rare day in September times, when the garrick come right in close, and into the estuaries, to spawn. After this big party, the fish are ravenous and will just about eat anything. That’s National Garrick Day, and there are sometimes two of them down here at The Sandspit, spaced about a week apart.

There is no early warning system in place for National Garrick Day, and the ones who find out first try keep it under wraps until word gets out and the floodgates open completely.

The following video was shot on National Garrick Day in 2008, and features some of the more (in)famous characters that fish The Sandspit and The Block all year round.

Enjoy!
