Elephant Seal by Jay Steenkamp

Elephant Seal by Jay Steenkamp

Elephant Seal by Jay Steenkamp

Our intrepid and voluntary sardine spy – Jay Steenkamp, has infiltrated the sardine fraternity to such an extent, that he can produce shots like these!

From Jay…

“Elephant Seal chilling on the beach today on the South Coast. Very rare to see one of these on our coast. Apparently only 9 have ever been seen on our coast in the last 40 years. This one is still a puppy but it’s the size of a large dog.”

This is the oddest news in today’s journal of all things sardine this 2017 on the KZN South Coast. Stay tuned as we try compile a comprehensive account of all the stories from all the sardine spies up and down. There are many reports!

However, they all agree on one thing – Sardines!

Literally everywhere, except the places we are all waiting for them. The Sardine Team has been patrolling, and the varied, but accounted for reports amount to many sardines, but in the faraway and literally unreachable places.

Except by boat!

That’s when you need Offshore Africa in Port St. Johns…they already all smell of sardines! They have been in the thick of it for a couple of weeks now. Swell or no swell. And there has been some swell! So if you are not feint hearted, and you love the smell of sardines in the morning – get in touch at…

The sards are coming!

The sards are coming!

The sards are coming!

The sards are coming! – that’s the word from Offshore Africa down in Port St. Johns.

Debbie Smith and Rob Nettleton make up the backbone of the team operating down there at the moment. And they are right there at the starting gates of the annual Sardine Run, this 2017.

Yesterday, their reporting of some close encounters with the ever interesting Bryde’s Whale chowing down bait balls at a time – and today – this from Debbie…

Rob is on his 3rd baitball again today. Vvv stoked. Just off 2nd beach
Wowser
Now ball 4. Ocean going off all over here today. Pilot says large ball at mbotyi as well. Its alive
More authentic proof that the sardines are well on their way to us right now! Thank you Offshore Africa!

Jaco Blignaut wins gold at Spearfishing Nationals

Jaco Blignaut number one again

Jaco Blignaut wins gold at Spearfishing Nationals

Jason Heyne reports in that Jaco Blignaut has taken the nationals again! And a few other things from under the waves up and down the KZN spearfishing coast.

The diving conditions were OK Saturday and Sunday then swell and wind every day made for an upset sea. Couta garrick and snoek are around and plenty other gamefish should be around as well because the sardines have arrived. Saturday a light offshore blows in the morning switching to a light to moderate north east in the afternoon with swell starting at 2.2 m and settling down to 1.5m later in the day. Sunday a light offshore blows in the morning with negligible wind later on and small 1.3m swell. So it looks like Sunday is a green light for a dive. Fish of the week goes to Kobus Delport with a 12.5kg garrick which also won him biggest gamefish at the SAUFF comp on the weekend. Well done to our KZN divers who cleaned up at Nationals. Well done Jaco Blignaut for placing 1st in individual event. Thank-you Freedivers and Rob Allen for sponsoring gear! As always dive safe and straight spears.

Sardine netted at Scottburgh

Yes, it’s official, with featured photos by Jay Steenkamp, of the Natal Sharks Board.

The sards were caught this very morning – and although not massive amounts, is a great sign of things hopefully coming our way!

Thanks to Jay Steenkamp who keeps us right in the loop each and every year. Our other sardine spies are also reporting action, but these are the first solid photographs.
