Sardine Run 2016 around the corner!

Sardine Run 2016 around the corner!

“The red hot pokers have bloomed” – Louis Wolmarans (uttered every year, over and over, like a chant).

Louis, long time surfing guru on the KZN South Coast, is amping for the waves each year. When the aloes bloom in their red splendour each year, it marks the beginning of the surfing season. And the sardine run 2016 too! An odd combination of events considering their mutual denominator – sharks!

The hills through the Transkei and surrounds are covered red with the flower of the aloe. Temperatures have dropped. And the swells have been coming through huge! Few surfers made it out at the big waves spots, and it looks like more to follow as cold fronts line up across the Atlantic, marching methodically and with purpose.

But big swells and sardines do go together. The ocean in its wild eastern seaboard state, confuses the little fish as they make their way north. Often the sardines beach in the wildest conditions.

But the ocean is still very warm, and even though confirmed reports of sardines have been made deeper into the Transkei – we still have a while to go.

In a month or so, things should be really humming!

In the meantime, enjoy this spectacular underwater video clip of a bunch of gannets, completely at home underwater, swimming from aisle to aisle as they load up in the gannet supermarket, 5 metres down. They are competing with common dolphin – beautiful with their contrasting colours, and of course sharks.

If this kind of thing gets you going, hop on over to offshoreportstjohns.com or divingwithsharks.co.za and login with Rob or Debbie for some up close and personal sardine action. They do specialised sardine run diving trips and ocean safari style outings, right from where all the action is – Port St. Johns.

KZN East Coast Spearfishing report

KZN East Coast Spearfishing report by Jason Heyne

Well the week so far hasn’t been good with big swell pounding the coast. A big south west has just arrived in Durban tonight (Friday) and will blow up to 35 knts bringing with it even bigger swell up to 4m. The wind dies down Saturday night. Swell drops off a bit to 1.8m Sunday with an offshore blowing in the morning switching to a light north east later in the day. Monday looks absolutely awesome with 1.1m swell running and a light offshore in the morning switching to a light south west in the afternoon. There was viz both south and north today. Monday is the go day! The zululand boys have been getting some quality fish. With this early winter swell and cold front the winter fish should be arriving en masse on the south coast. I have had reliable reports of big sardine action in the kei. As always dive safe and straight spears.””

Thank you Jason Heyne!

Diving With Sharks!

Diving With Sharks!

Diving With Sharks! Debbie Smith aka The Shark Lady, has recently launched her brand new website and online campaign at http://divingwithsharks.co.za.

Incredible imagery leads to Debbie’s underwater options – the current favourite being The Sardine Run as we move into the sardine migration season – when they swim up the East Coast of Africa.

Millions of sardines head north on a kamikaze mission as they are hammered to pieces by all kinds of underwater predators. Dolphins. Seals. Gannets. Whales. And sharks. Plenty!

The Sardine Run trips by Diving With Sharks, in association with Offshore Africa Port St. Johns, are run from out of the Uzmzimvubu River on the Transkei Wild Coast. Rob Nettleton and Debbie Smith have been operating in this area – the best place to get to the sardine shoals and baitballs, as they come up from the southern ocean, for a decade now.

Diving With Sharks also operate up north in KZN waters – Aliwal Shoal and Protea Reef being hot spots, and where Debbie learned her skills as shark tamer. That’s her in the picture below! Note how Debbie holds her hands and arms close to her body – less to bite onto for the odd curious shark, that come in so close.

Click on over to Diving With  Sharks for more info or to book a Sardine Run experience – accommodation and all, with Debbie and Rob.

KZN Spearfishing in Wintertime – by Jason Heyne

KZN Spearfishing in Wintertime – by Jason Heyne

And we have Jason Heyne delivering the news every spearo is gasping for! It’s ON! KZN Spearfishing in Wintertime is what we live for! Winter conditions are gonna blanket our beautiful east coastline with idyllic conditions – offshores every morning, clean water  and calm surf…and coming soon to a beach near you – sardines!

Ok, over to Jason Heyne, telling it like it is…

“Sea conditions have really improved this week especially along the south coast the problem is cold water has moved in in places so finding warmer water is key. The weather conditions this weekend are great with a light north east on Saturday and 1.4m swell running and a light south west blowing Sunday with a 1.2m swell running. Wahoo are on the Aliwal shoal with big tropical yellow tail on the deeper pinnacles. Queen mackerel are inshore in the warmer water with daga salmon and blood snapper out deeper. White mussel cracker have arrived on the south coast. Best viz is on the south coast from Umkomaas down. Both Saturday and Sunday are looking really good for a dive. As always dive safe and straight spears. ”
