Barra breaks again – Feb 2021

Barra breaks again – this past few days and weeks has seen some wild wet season weather patterns that are typical of a February around Southern Africa.

Boisterous! February is actually the source of a tonne of swell. The only thing is that it goes in all directions!? And when the stars line up for surfers, this happens at the miles-long sandspit that is Barra.

The video below features a few clips shot by Lalaland Africa’s Chad Leavitt. Who never misses these swells. Luckily he lives there hey?

Anyway, a previous video I posted of Barra, created quite a scene way back when. It was actually one of my top-performing videos and many comments went along the lines of – “Hey man if you show people this stuff you gonna get crowds”. Type thing. I just have to laugh because even if you drop a few hundred good surfers on this miles long lineup, they will all get barrelled. And worked. It is a very difficult place to surf as it gets bigger. At 6 to 8 ft there are atom bombs exploding on the sand. The place has a current flying down it at a huge rate of knots. You can hardly walk in the shallows from it. Many of the waves closeout. It is such a long walk back to the top. Can take 20 minutes or more.

But it’s the manageable days that really count. When the sun is blazing. Blue Mozam skies. And it’s like 4 ft and everyone manages to get out. These are the days. Where on one of my many runs back up to the top, I pass surfers, my mates, lying in puddles of exhaustion. Moaning at their punishment. As perfect wave after perfect wave run by unchallenged by anyone. Yes Dave and Aladinho, I am talking about you guys!

Lalaland Africa

Chad Leavitt, who secreted these pics and video to us, runs the enchanted Lalaland, on the beach, across at Tofo. Where he has his very own set of waves, spread out in front of his place. They even have names! But if you get yourself all that way up there, get in touch and let’s see if we can get you into Lalaland. Very reasonable and really a perfect hideaway. PRESS RELEASE DOLPHINS WITHOUT LIFE FOUND IN THE NATIONAL PARK OF THE ARCHIPELAGO DO BAZARUTO, FEBRUARY 22, 2021

Another very sad instance of dolphins beaching. They stranded themselves in the shallows of the Bazaruto Archipelago, near Bazaruto Island, recently. Investigations will be conducted into why the cetaceans got themselves into this state. – Xonalanga

• The Ministry of Land and Environment, through the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) informs that on the morning of February 21, 2021 in the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, 32 dolphins of the species Stenella longirostris hit the coast, 25 of which lost their lives at the site and 7 were rescued by the Park and taken back to the sea.

Of the 25 animals killed, 11 are adult males and 14 are females, with 12 adults, one (1) juvenile and one (1) child.

An investigation is underway to investigate the causes of death. From the expert work done, it was found that the dolphins did not show any signs of injury.

The viscera were extracted with the intention of checking if they had consumed anything strange that had caused their death, but nothing was found with the naked eye. The National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), through the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, will send the 25 samples to the laboratory for further analysis.

In order to monitor the status of the 7 animals saved and returned to the sea, the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park is conducting patrols on all the coasts of the islands that make up the Park. Until the afternoon of February 22, there were no signs that the 7 animals had returned to the coast, which increases the chances that they have survived so far.

Following the implementation of the protocol in force in the Conservation Areas for the management of animals found dead, the bodies of the 25 dolphins were incinerated.

The National Administration of Conservation Areas informs that it will update the public on the details of the investigation work now underway, in order to determine the causes of death of those marine mammals. In the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park (PNAB), in addition to the occurrence of marine mammals such as dugongs, whales, dolphins and others, provided by the combination of shallow and deep waters, as well as the availability of nutrients and tranquility in the area, occurrence of 180 species of birds, 45 of reptiles, 16 of land mammals, 500 of marine and coastal mollusks, and 2000 species of fish. The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park (PNAB), located in the province of Inhambane, has an area of 1,430 km2 and was created on May 25, 1971, being the first marine park in the country. (x)

Story: The Master Watermen has arrived

Ok, it is finally here! The Master Watermen project. A collaboration between Jason Heyne and The Sardine News, this is gonna one fun website and YouTube Channel.

It actually already is a fun website and a fun YouTube Channel. The website is pretty and neat, doesn’t try to do too much at these early times. Watch the space though. And the YouTube Channel, well, with 138 eager beaver Subscribers already cashing in on the FREE Channel and it’s video tutorials, all we can hope is that The Bear keeps up the relentless pace he has set already.

I mean, rescuing a turtle from an octopus stranglehold. And having another hitch a ride. For the fun of it! And all brilliantly captured underwater by Jason and his head cam. All capably edited into bite-sized chunks of action that will have your dreaming them at night.

Well, it is our second published ‘Story’ as it were, using Google’s new communication tool meant to take on the Tik Toks and Instas and the bunch.

And they really have been favouring us in the search ratings and content feeds. Our last story did phenomenally well, and you can expect more and more of this format as we get to know how to work the limited interface provided. This will surely improve!
