JP Bartholomew catches 8 gamefish on lures in the Umzimkulu

Catching gamefish on lures in the Umzimkulu River like this is dreamy

JP Bartholomew catches 8 gamefish on lures in the Umzimkulu

“JP Bartholomew spent this last weekend down on the Umzimkulu river, fishing with artificials only. He consistently outfished everyone, by far, including the live baiters. I have fished the Umzimkulu since I could paddle, and never have I seen so much success, from one angler. KP. Legend!” – Shonalanga

Following My late avie session off the Umzimkulu River Estuary Barge yesterday while throwing a Sean Lange No 1 Mini Shot MYDO Lure for Kob while moving down towards the mouth i saw some nice spots where a few locals were fishing from and access to it from the road side and thought I’d give it a go the water is nice greenish blue and with a deep drop off with some nice structure too.

So with my new MYDO Lure Mini Shot No1….. I arrived to see if I  could get some action and entice some Rogue Rockies lurking around the banks and structure I  was on My 13th flick towards the trees over hanging the waters when I got hit hard by either a Kingfish or a Rock Salmon it started peeling line and heading towards the trees and rocks I then knew it was a Rockie trying to head back into his hole! Setting My drag tight I didn’t give him the chance to try cut me or jam me in his but hole he then took off again losing the drag slightly so it wouldn’t snap the braid went BANG and the Rockie had the better of Me and I lost him in the rocks and with My new MYDO Lure the only one I had was gone.

Taking a minute or so to replace my drop Shot rig I put on a 5″ Ghost plastic on with a 3/4 oz regular jig head. Throwing into the same area where I picked up my last Rock Salmon I was into My 14th /27th (overall) cast I got picked up again and managed to hang onto this Boykie an landed him onto the bank. I took the pic and returned him back safely. I had a few more flicks around but nothing was happening. I decide to move down to another spot semi grassed spot still with deep water with a bend in the River which eventually straightens out towards the mouth area.Putting on another Ghost plastic I flicked it out towards the structure with semi fast to fast to intice anyhuntingg  game fish i was I into my 20th cast when i got torn into again and had line getting peeled off trying to slow down this locomotion of a fish hoping not to lose it at all it wasn’t a small fish to big enough to give my 7 ft Crucial fitted with a Sustian 3000 15 lb braid.

Holding on and giving  him no more room to run I started turning him to the bank minutes later I landed a nice Rock Salmon measuring at 53 cms nice healthy specimen releasing him as soon as possible not wanting to but anymore stress on him a put it back and was eager to get back as he went straight down into the deep water’s. I was a great morning losing one landing two Rockies it felt good the locals started picking up as the rod and reels started taking up any gaps along the fishable bank spots

I returned back to where we were staying at the Umzimkulu River Estuary Marina lodge. I popped in to see My wife and two Boy’s hard to believe they were all asleep still definitely they had a Awesome Weekend down here. I decide to go down to the three seater jetty that runs off parallel to the drop off that I had success with on early Saturday morning. I changed my colour to a 5″ McArthy Elf Jerk Shad why the water was a lot more dirty and Brown and with a darker plastic on it gives off a better silhouette in the water. The tide was starting to go out so I didn’t have much longer to fish so I started flicking towards the drop off’s  and surrounding’s. I’m not sure but I think I was on my 8th throw when I got a bump continuing to twitch drop twitch drop in so doing I was hoping I’d get hit again and yes please I was on….loosening my drag I let this fish run with  some nice head  shakes I knew I had a small Kobbie on. Chuffed with My catch I played him until he was ready to let Me land him. He finally submitted to Me and I picked him up ever so gently and carried it up onto the grass to take a pick I lay My rod along the side of it to see the length and give you an idea of the size of it.

I eventually got it to lay still took the pick and carried it back down to the river where I released it back safely to fight and hopefully be set free again to become a breeder in the near future. I stuckit out for another 40 min and kept flicking around but it got very quite and the Sun was a lot higher.I headed back to the cottage to spend some quality time with My family.

It’s been a very interesting and exciting weekend down here at the Umzimkulu River Estuary Marina trying some new lures made by Sean Lange and what would of been my fist catch on he’s lure but I think I was just out gunned by a better fish. I’m sure when I meet up with Sean I will also have a better understanding of the River and its secrets with more of the MYDO Mini Shot No1 Drop Shot lures too…..!!

I must say My goodbye’a to the Umzimkulu River Estuary Marina lodge and the great hospitality that came with it as well as a Big thank you to Sean for a Awsome Weekend that even My 7 yr old Son Tristan said this was my bestest weekend ever thanks again Mr S A Lange….!!

It’s goodbye from Me tight lines…

Cheers JP.

Catch n release as we go! JP Bartholomew live from the Umzimkulu…

How beatuful are these rock salmon?! Or Mangrove Jack. Enough to make you want to catch n release forever!

Catch n release as we go! JP Bartholomew live from the Umzimkulu…

The Umzimkulu Marina was abuzz with the news that the JP Bartholomew was spending the weekend. JP, as our readers know by now, has an incredible track record, and seems to have a nose for the fish he targets.

So it was that JP and family’s weekend has arrived, and in less than 12 hours – take a look at how the pros do it!

We have today given JP a pack of MYDO LuckShots to use, so we can compare with regular drop snots.

One thing is for sure – the Umzimkulu is producing as it normally does this time of the year. And JP has conclusively proven, that even though he took three hours to get his first fish, the quality of the fish he catches, is worth it, so much more than fishing with bait.

Come and join us at The Umzimkulu Marina down in Port Shepstone, where all the fishing action seems to be these days (ha ha I am in Jhb!). umzimkulu@gmail.com for more information and package deal opportunities.

Huge couta catch for Team Mydo

a Huge couta by Marc Lange - 35kg's, one of three over 30kg's Marc got this super fishing day

Huge couta catch for Team Mydo

A huge couta catch for Team Mydo today as Marc Lange and Koos Viviers returned home with the most remarkable boat load of fish.

For days and days, weeks and weeks, months and months, season and season…of coming home with no fish, Marc and Koos had the best day of their lives.

They got 9, with three going over 30kg’s, the biggest being Marc’s fish of 35kg?! Undisputed champions of the crocodile couta!

Not since the Posthumous team a few years ago got 7 in this category, off Port Edward, has anyone seen, let alone experienced a catch like this.

(The next day, not even one  The fish had moved on, just like that!)

The South Coast of KZN Natal, South Africa, has consistently been producing absolutely incredible catches of the big couta that have been frequenting our waters, for the last few seasons. They are feeding on the balls of livebait that are hanging around the area. Using MYDO Livebaitswimmers and Baitswimmers, is how Marc and Koos get to present a real good bait, at the exact right depth.

More about The MYDO here.

Anybody wanting to have a go at these trophy fish can contact me Sean on umzimkulu@gmail.com or call +27 79 326 9671.

We run boats out of the Umzimkulu Marina and stay at their cozy self-catering units right on the river’s edge. Packages including accommodation, guided deep-sea and river charters are available.

Catching Kingies from the beach with JP Bartholomew

Catching Kingies from the beach with JP Bartholomew

“It has been absolutely marvellous having guest writer (and seriously hot angler) JP Bartholomew (pictured) share his remarkeable catches with us here on thesardine.co.za. Many thanks JP and please keep ’em coming!  -Shonalanga”

Over to you JP…

Every angler dreams of tussling with that aggressive and dirty fighter, the (Caranx ignobilis) – the Giant Kingfish -and I ‘m no different. However, although the Giant Kingfish is top of the list, there are many other Kingfish species that are almost as exciting to catch. My quest for special prized Kingfish began fresh one morning in May when I knew the big boys were coming down for the biggest event of the year – the annual Sardine Run!
I headed down to my favourite stretch of beach at Umdloti South around 07:30am. The fishing conditions were perfect – it was a few days after Full Moon and with a slight south westerly wind blowing with a pushing in tide. I was using my new Explorer 9-wt Classic 2 fitted with a Orion 9wt, Snowbee Intermediate line and a 40lb flouro leader. The heavy leader sinks quickly, ensuring my fly reaches the strike zone quicker and a lot less easier to be cut off by your kingfish at the end of your line.

After tying on a brown brush fly I tried my first spot where two reefs separate and there’s a nice deep channel – perfect for Kingies. I had no luck there, so I moved on, casting as I walked the stretch of beach. My second spot featured a good drop off  where there’s a fairly deep gulley and I knew baitfish would be hanging around. Over the previous weeks, I had seen kingfish come in and smash the baitfish trapped in the gulley.
I stripped off line to get a good cast into the all-important strike zone , then allowed the fly to sink before starting my retrieve with a medium-fast to fast action. If there was a kingfish in the area I was hoping it would see the fly imitating a small fleeing baitfish and would hopefully smash it , but not to be – all quiet.

On my walk to the next spot, I changed the brown brush fly to a red and black brush fly fitted with a 4/0 Mustad hook. I was hoping that this would be the fly that breaks the camels back. When I reached Reef Bay I started stripping off line ,determined I would have success. In this bay there is a lot of scattered rocks structure and kingfish hang around the area hoping to  ambush unsuspecting baitfish.
On my sixth or seventh cast I let the leader sink slowly before starting to retrieve my line. On my second pull the line went tight and the water boiled in front of me in the shore break. I was On !
Judging by the continuous head shakes I was pretty sure I’d hooked into a decent kingie on the end of my line. He was stripping off line very quickly and before I knew it I was into my backing. Kingies are dirty fighters so I had to turn this fish around and keep him off the reef, otherwise, he would definitely cut me off. I was lucky the tide was still coming in and the water fairly shallow , so I kept my rod high and the line tight and gradually began to turn him and get the better of him.
As I started retrieving some line back I could see the silver shape of the fish in front of me. Despite him making the odd run, trying to get into deeper water where he would try to cut me off,he was coming closer and started to use the shore break to bring him in and tire him out.

At last I could see the size and species of kingfish – it was a whopper of a Black Tip Kingfish – at least 6- 7 kilos ! Finally, a nice size wave helped bring him in closer to allow me to beach him. I was thrilled – my biggest BlackTip Kingfish on fly. I quickly measured the  fish ,and with a length of 81 cm I reckoned was about 7.8kg. I quickly  forgot my tiredness and looked around for another angler to take a picture of me holding this amazing specimen, all the while aware that he was also tired and needed to get him back into the water as soon as possible. Fortunately an elderly gentleman walking his dog saw me fighting my fish and was eager to see my catch he took the picture for me before I safely returned the kingfish back to the ocean.

With the right conditions and a few days after a full moon ,you are bound to into something interesting – and hopefully big – on this stretch of beach. Many other species of kingfish can also be caught at Umdloti South; I’ve caught GT’s, Brazzy’s and Bigeyed kingfish and then, of course there are the Kob and Giant Blue Shad  and Grunter as well as many others if you’re prepared  to put in the time and effort.
Always remember that any fish which has endured a long fight needs  to be revived by getting to get sea water to flow over his gills before it’s released back into the water. Ensure you take that special photo of your catch and quickly release it and let your fish roam free. Each new fishing trip, each cast ,each fish caught Becomes a unique once in a lifetime Experience…….!!!

Enjoy the reading and remember LET GO LET GROW……!!

Cheers JP.
