Wet Wintery Weather for KZN this week by Adam in Durban KZN
Wet Wintery Weather for KZN this week by Adam in Durban KZN: Snow on the mountains again! Bringing a chill to the air as it breezes in from the south west.
Over to Adam on the spot in Durban…
Synoptic
There is a strong high pressure coming right in behind the current set of low pressures – that are causing the current wet and cold conditions over southern Africa. This high looks to be big enough to bring some sunny skies to the Cape areas as the week unfolds. As for us here in KZN and the Eastern Cape, we have these low pressures sitting right over us at the moment. And we are counting on that same high pressure moving across to us and bringing us some sunny skies too.
Expect the cold and the wet for a few more days in KZN and EC though.
Surfing
This is has been a remarkable run of waves for Durban and the rest of KZN. For about a month now the waves have been rideable, if not cooking!
Check out today’s Durban gallery as shot by Adam earlier this morning…
Today is another cool day to be a surfer. And not just in Durban. Up and down the coast, before the wind gets up too much, you will find some waves to be a part of.
Fishing
The tides are moving away from spring tides, and the sea should settle nicely as the low pressure moves along. Shad season opens in three weeks.
The Bear of The Master Watermen website delivers his weekly report on Tuesdays and Fridays each week. Looking forward to today’s instalment. Once we’ve all seen that we will all know exactly what fish to be targeting.
Sardines and Sighting Maps
It has been a fantastic sardine run this memorable 2024. And all the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. This year’s map has been viewed 191,000 times and just keeps growing.
Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. This year we started to log more whale and dolphin sightings. And we even had a shipwreck! And a freaking tornado! And recently a capsized KZNSB boat! We have been updating the map with recent catches too…
These events will from now on be included in the Sardine News Sightings Map for 2024. And on the 1 January 2025, we shall start all over again.

Typical Monday Conditions for KZN Today 4 Nov 2024 by Adam Kamdar from the Durban Beachfront
Typical Monday Conditions for KZN Today 4 Nov 2024 by Adam Kamdar from the Durban Beachfront: The cycle of great Monday’s might be firing up again as today unfolds dreamily. The last two Mondays were absolutely terrible. The week ahead looks to be rather interesting as the low-pressure systems are dominating southern Africa right now.
Over to Adam on the Durban Beachfront with an in-depth analysis of current conditions…
Thank you Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper. Check out their Black November promotions right HERE.
Synoptic
You can see on the synoptic chart here, that there is a huge high-pressure off to the west and sitting pretty over the Atlantic Ocean. Moving towards the east and over the landmass of Africa, we have a bunch of convoluted low-pressures trying to team up and maintain dominance for the week.
Further across towards Australia and over the vaste Indian Ocean, there is another large high-pressure concentration. This is keeping all the low pressures working together.
The next cold front, due in about a week or less, looks to be dominated and thrust south by the massive high pressures on either side. This means good weather and maybe even some decent swell from the east.
Surfing
Well, we got summer mornings and insides to ride as we move into the summer and rainy season. This is a challenging time of the year but if you are early enough, you gonna get the waves.
Fishing
It’s a beautiful fishing ocean right now. The tide is backing off and the weather seems to be holding dry for now. There is gonna be some wet coming later tomorrow and during the week. You may have to take an umbrella fishing with you!
This garrick was caught this very morning! Margate Pier.
Taking full advantage of the lekker Monday conditions for KZN. Margate Pier, KZN Lowewr South Coast.
The kingfish below was caught on an artificial in the Umzimkulu Estuary recently. A helluva fight on light tackle. And a real treat for the budding angler. Come and join us for this type of easy and comfortable fishing at https://umzimkuluadrenalin.co.za anytime.
Great Estuary Fishing conditions for KZN the next few weeks until the rains start. Got to get in before the rain!
Diving
Well, let’s wait for The Bear of The Master Watermen website, for his comprehensive dive report for the weekend. This should pop later today, stay tuned to stay tuned in.

South West Winds All Day Today 3 Nov 24 by Adam Kamdar in Durban
South West Winds All Day Today 3 Nov 24 by Adam Kamdar in Durban: It’s rare that the south-west wind blows gently all day in KZN. Today seems to be one of those gems—except that the wind is going to gust in later in the afternoon.
Over to Adam on the beach in Durban…

Synoptic
This wind is a pre-runner to the big south west winds that are gonna blow hard here in KZN for the next few days. The cold front causing all the upset put its foot to the floor and accelerated across the country to arrive here a good 24 hours earlier than predicted by the weather models.
So we end up with many low-pressure systems floating about the country. And two massive high pressure systems hemming it all in and focusing all that energy in kZN over the next few days.
All the way into Wednesday and even Thursday. By Thursday the full effect of the cold front on the ocean will be apparent. In the form of a monster open ocean swell reaching almost 5 meters. Luckily it is directly from the south and so should roll past without causing too much concern for inshore ocean users.
Overcast
The entire week looks to be sporting typical KZN Natal summer weather. Humid and hot. Day after day. It can’t really get too cold anymore so we just gonna have to deal with a lot of wind.
Surfing
Great surfing conditions for Durban’s many surf spots in town. In the earlier part of the day, both north and south coast will be firing too as the tide drops and the offshore blows it all smooth.
Fishing
The stable pressure period we have just been through has been wonderful for the fishing. It is still a winter gamefish type scene with kob, garrick, yellowtail and kingfish making up most of the headline catches.
Some really big kob again!
Diving
Sure hoping that the spearos can get in today and tell us what else is going on down below the surface.

Dbn KZN 6am Conditions Report by Adam Kamdar on the Durban Golden Mile
Dbn KZN 6am Conditions Report by Adam Kamdar on the Durban Golden Mile: A great beach day for some. But not for others. No surfers. No boats out off Durban today. These high-pressure systems bring along fantastic sun-tanning and surf fishing weather.
Over to Adam…
Fishing
Today will be all about the gulleys. Scratching through with tiny baits or lures puts you in the game for all sorts of gulley gangsters. Bronzies. Germans. Rockcod. Blacktail…
And if you are really feeling lucky, maybe you will come face-to-face with the gulley king. The brusher. These fish are visiting KZN Natal in numbers right now. And they swim shallow. Real shallow. The only problem with these mighty fish is that they get so big and strong.
Trouble on light tackle!
Estuaries
If you are lucky enough to have a clean and functioning estuary near you, now is the time of the year to be taking full advantage.
Here in the Umzimkulu last night we caught two greenspot kingfish on live mullet. Both released healthily and full of bounce. Man-oh-man do these fish fight dirty. Under the boat, around the jetty, over the mooring lines…non-stop when you got one of these guys on your line.
With a lovely low tide at around 10am, the whole day is actually great tides. With a 1.9m high at 4pm, start fishing now, and fish ALL day!
Winds
Well it’s gonna blow later. But for now things are lovely and calm and the sea might even get a chance to mellow out this morning.
Synoptic
That big old cold front hitting Cape Town today has it’s sights firmly set on arriving here in KZN on Monday later. And then it’s gonna blast until Tuesday is out. Leaving us back in the good seats once the cold front has jetted past, on Wednesday/Thursday or so.

Easterly Conditions for the Weekend by Adam Kamdar in Durban KZN 7am on the 1 November 2024
Easterly Conditions for the Weekend by Adam Kamdar in Durban KZN 7am on the 1 November 2024: There are going to be clouds over the weekend but the rain is only going to start up again next week. When the south comes to play. In the meantime, over to Adam to greet November in and get us up to speed.
Thank you Adam!

Conditions for the weekend will be nice but cloudy at times. Real rain comes next week again.
Synoptic
There is a rather substantial cold front aiming at Cape Town at the moment. The valiant high-pressures that have had our backs the last week or so are running out of steam. To keep fighting the cold fronts off with.
Synoptic chart predicts weather conditions for the weekend here in KZN to be just great. Wave conditions not so good. Water conditions also dubious at best. Although it will all improve next week after the south winds blow.
When the high pressures are in good shape, they bandy together to form a barrier to entry for cold fronts trying to get onto the African landmass. But after a while, the cold fronts build up enough energy to fight back and win.
It’s gonna take four days or so for this energised cold front to reach KZN. Monday late or Tuesday will see the first puffs from coming in from the south.
This means that we may get some Berg wind conditions on Sunday or Monday. And everybody loves a Berg wind!
Estuary fishing is a great way to escape the relentless onshore flow of wind during these high pressures. An hour south of Durban is the KZN Lower South Coast with it’s many estuaries. The biggest and most productive estuary being the Umzimkulu River mouth in Port Shepstone. Which is where we are based at the moment. If you would like to join us fishing this weekend or whenever, drop us a line on +27793269671 or umzimkulu@gmail.com.
