11 AM Sardines in KZN on an exciting 19 June 2024 by Kevin in Qora

11 AM Sardines in KZN on an exciting 19 June 2024 by Kevin in Qora: yes well it’s all happening except the netting as I wrote this at 11:15 AM. Kevin compiled a great summary and a report and here it is.

Over to Kevin…

?Howzit everyone, this is Kevin at Qora Mouth, just north of Mazepa Bay in the Southern Transkei. While our spotters have come through for us, they say that there’s a lovely shoal, a little bit deep off St. Mike’s right now, but heading north slowly. This could be just a little splinter group off the big shoal that moved past Port Edward yesterday.

It doesn’t sound like it’s a huge shoal, but there are sards moving north, which is wonderful news. Thanks for watching. Even though they were a little bit deep, which is probably due to the warmer water. They’re just heading a little bit deeper. The deeper you go, the colder it gets. The deeper you go, the warmer it gets.

So these sides are just following the cold water. That’s what they do. And they work a little bit erratically. So all we can do is report on the current situation. We did hear of a good net that came out at Hibberdene yesterday afternoon, late. So the sards are still around, and I suspect that the big shoal that passed Wild Coast Sun yesterday is going to get up and going as well.

If I look out deep, I see there is a lovely south swell starting to pick up again. And that south swell, the closer it gets to land, and it generally takes about 24 to 48 hours to move in closer, and once it comes onto the continental shelf, because of the shallower water, those swells pick up into much bigger swells, they release a lot more energy, and the sards are going to find that extremely beneficial for them to start moving up the coast where they come to the surface, and they use that forward momentum of that south swell, where a south swell is actually moving from south to north, Which is against the current, so that brings the sards to the surface very quickly.

We’ll keep you updated we have got a report also in Durban that the water is still sitting around 22 degrees. But that is one degree less than it was, so that’s also good news. So all these factors are now looking very, very good and favorable for these sards to move in close. And then it’ll be game on once again.

Cool. Thanks a lot, guys. We’ll talk to you later, probably put out a report this afternoon if anything happens. So keep watching and keep looking for the latest reports from us at The Sardine News.

Early Sardine Report 19 June 2024 by The Bear

Sardine Report by The Master Watermen 19 June 2024 at 7AM

Early Sardine Report 19 June 2024

Early Sardine Report 19 June 2024: we are having a phenomenal early sardine run this year. So much so that The Sardine News website broke! So we will share the posts between the many websites we run, in the future. Especially here at The Master Watermen.

I just got some inside information from netters who were successful yesterday late afternoon with a net real close to Hibberdene. Just a bit north.

And right now along the backline at Uvongo and St. Mikes shoals are milling about waiting for the tide to drop.

Enjoy the video…

Spearfishing

This a great time to be a spearfisherman. Clean water. Gamefish. Sardines. It’s like a magical imaginary wonder world down there. Check out this recent gallery of catches.

Fishing

During the sardine run, fish are much easier to shoot than to catch. Which is why we all went underwater in the first place. But some anglers are getting lucky and garrick are being hooked all up and down the KZN coastline. Aswell as those lekka big old kob. The 20kg models that sit right in the shore break to ambush shad and sardines as they swim by.

You have to be completely ‘doff’ not to be catching your daily quota of shad. Which is FOUR I might remind y’all!

Deep Sea

It’s a tough time being a ski-boater this time of the year. The fish are everywhere. Every beach. Every reef. Fish have migrated to here from all over the show. To get their share of the spoils. But they ain’t biting! They are after the fresh power-packed bite-sized sardines. That are freely available everywhere right now.

Today 19 June 2024

Those outsized shoals sighted yesterday on the lower south coast have got everyone on edge. Up early. Drinking coffee and waiting on The Sardine Report.

These big shoals could surprise us all and disappear completely again. The water in Durban is 22 degrees and that is way too warm.

Yesterday Kevin in Qora was reporting his water right down to 16 degrees. And that water is not the result of any incessant easts. None have been blowing hard enough to chill the water that much. So Kevin deduces that his cold patch down there in the deep Transkei, is yet another cut off section of cold being sandwiched against the shore line and being driven north by pressure.

Kevin’s understanding of the sardines and the ocean is unparalleled. And he has a grandstand seat. His verandah! Kevin runs Wild Coast Cottages. You can get ahold of him via The Sardine News website. Which is kinda broken at the moment but it is still serving the news luckily.

Sardines lingering by Kevin in Qora and Underwater Report by The Bear

Sardines lingering 2pm 17 June 2024

Sardines lingering by Kevin in Qora and Underwater Report by The Bear

Sardines lingering by Kevin in Qora and Underwater Report by The Bear: this double-barreled report deals with many of the issues facing the sardine right now…

Kevin explains…

How’s it everyone? This is Kevin from Qora Mouth, just north of Mazepa Bay in southern Transkei. Well not much changed today, unfortunately. The water around Durban is still way over 22 degrees. And that’s a tiny drop from yesterday, but it’s hovering there. And yeah, I can say even in the Transkei down here, I’ve spoken to a ski boater and they were out yesterday and The water even here is way above 20 degrees.

And you know, closer in, it’s a little bit colder, but yeah, that’s a result of the current. The current is screaming right now down here. It’s running at about four to five kilometres an hour. So all that warm water from Durban is already showing up here on the Transkei coast. So there’s a lot of warm water filtering through.

And that obviously, as we discussed, affects the sardine activity up there. So let’s let’s hope things change. But here there was some cast netting going on in the shallows at Oslo beach today, right off the rocks, the guys on the beach. No netters went out, but the public were having a feast with their cast nets.

And Mdumbi. Coffee Bay. Hole in the Wall, there are some minor shoals lingering around a bit of bird activity, no dolphins present, lots of Brydes Whales, and other whales, Humpbacks in their migration, breaching, so beautiful to watch, it’s still you know, life is still very abundant on the wild coast, and Yeah, so yeah, that’s about it what we got today guys let’s just hope things change But it’s not looking good Unless some other shoals come through which I highly doubt as the migration happens once a year, and that is, you know, the, these cold plumes that come off the Agulhas Bank, the whole shoal of sardines moves on, en masse, up the west coast.

Sardines Lingering

So they do that once, and we’re not seeing any reports of sardines sitting off Mossel Bay or Knysna or Hermanus, which is where they kind of linger in that cold water until that cold water pushes north. So yeah, also another thing to bear in mind is that there is no south swell right now. I’m looking at the horizon and it’s flat as a pancake.

So, yeah, that’s what also moves these cold plumes up towards, the KZN areas. And there’s nothing evident right now. So yeah, we’re on hold. Just as always keep those beaches tidy guys clean up after yourselves even clean up after the other people Let’s conserve and protect. That’s all I got. Cheers

Report from Master Watermen

Then we go over to The Bear at lunchtime too…

Well peeps over the long weekend the sea has been ballistic. Welcome to another report by the bear. Quickly for the sardine news, um, yeah, east is up now but the sea was very good this morning. Some guys getting some snook, pretty sure some garrik came out. The east blows into the night, and then the sea is calm again in the morning.

Yeah, sea temperature’s up, um, from, uh, 19, 20 degrees to 23 and a half degrees. Very strong south north current. That’s obviously dropped off today now with the east. Anyways, not much on the sardine front, but as always dive safe and straight spears away from the bear.

Sardines are Delicious 16 June 2024 6PM Report by Kevin in Qora

Twin Garrick at the Sandspit by Clinton Pillay and Roy Pillay

Sardines are Delicious 16 June 2024 6PM Report by Kevin in Qora

Sardines are Delicious 16 June 2024 6PM Report by Kevin in Qora: Kevin in Qora updates us on how delicious sardines are. And that sometimes they even swim backwards!

?How’s it everyone? This is Kevin at Qora Mouth, just north of Mazepa Bay in the Southern Transkei. Well, yeah, it’s it is what it is. It’s another quiet day of sardine run activity. I actually have a group of 10 chaps down here fishing. They just arrived this morning. They’re from Port Shepstone. They brought me a whole bucket full of fresh sards to eat, which I’m very thankful for.

And yeah, they’ve also given me some insights into what’s going on. And they sang that over yesterday and the day before. It looks like those shoals that are sitting around, you know, those areas in the south coast, they’re actually starting to move backwards. So this is a very clear indicator of what’s going on, and you’ll see by the, the graph up above, as we discussed yesterday, we were the first to point this out the water temperature is warming up considerably up towards Durban.

So when I. I phoned the Durban Lifeguards yesterday to get an accurate reading. They told me 20, 22. 5 or 22. 7, the temperature. It went up to way over 23 degrees later in the afternoon. So this is exactly what’s happening guys. This is you know, these, these sardines come from cold water. The only reason the sardine run happens is because there’s a cold water plume that comes up the East Coast and they travel within that.

So when they reach KZN and especially when they reach around Durban, they start hitting the warm water. And it’s very, very bad for them. They can’t survive in water that’s 23 degrees Celsius. So they have two options. Go backwards and try and find cold water or head out into the deep where if they dive deeper off the continental shelf.

They’ll find water back that’s in the 19 to 20 degree range And then they will be caught in the current and they’ll move back to the Agulhas Bank So this is exactly what’s happening now guys These sardines have reached extremely warm water And yeah, they’re they’re hung up south of Durban and All we can hope for is that the water cools down considerably over the next few days.

Today, down here in Qora Mouth, there is a northeasterly wind blowing, and let’s hope that’s also happening up in KZN, because we know the northeaster brings cooler water, and the southwesterly wind brings warmer water. So Let’s hope this temperature of the water drops. We need to get it back down to around 20 degrees, 21 maybe.

Yeah, they can probably be all right then, but these sardines favour water in the 16 to 17-degree range. So yeah, that’s where it’s at guys. Let’s just hope that the conditions change and keep these sardines on the coast. Anyway, that’s all I got for now. We haven’t heard too much of netting going on today, but I’m very looking forward to this bucket of sardines I just received from my guests and I’m going to be frying up some fish masala today.

And yeah, I’ve heard all about how good these sards are to chow. These ones were caught yesterday in a cast net. So yeah, life is good, LG. I get to share in the spoils. Anyway, that’s all I got for now, guys. Let’s keep it real. Keep those beaches tidy. If you can pack it in, take it out as well. Only leave your footprints.

That’s all I got. Cheers.
