Wayne Trelawney Garrick at Port St. Johns

Wayne Trelawney Garrick at Port St. Johns

Garrick at Port St. Johns
Wayne Trelawney. Garrick at Port St. Johns. Circa 2014!

Update from August 2020: Since the illegal jigging activities have been making headlines in the search engines recently (August 2020), many of our old stories are popping up. Like this trophy fish by long-time guest of Umzimkulu Marina. Which he caught the legal way. A live shad. A fish of a lifetime!

He caught it on a holiday at Port St. Johns. In September 2014. He only caught this one fish. It is all he ever wanted.

It is guys like Wayne, who follow the rules, respect the environment, and takes only a dream fish like this one, every few years – that need to be respected and acknowledged.

The gentlemen of the sea.

Unlike current scenario (June 2020) where the very same garrick that inspired Wayne to fuel up his car, load his tackle, and drive from the Free State where he lives – are being mercilessly jigged from the estuary. Just like the tourists are being jigged out of Port St Johns as photos and video of the slaughter make the social media rounds. The images are sickening and you can see very clearly that its not down and out poor people who live in Port St Johns. Nope. These guys have got twin-tailed exhaust pipes and 4WD! As you can clearly see in the pics on social media.

Garrick at Port St. Johns (original post from 2014)

Wayne Trelawney has been fishing with us down on the Umzimkulu periodically. Here he shows off a trophy-sized Garrick at Port St. Johns recently.

The fishing down in the Transkei has been consistently spectacular lately.
Trophy fish of all the most popular edibles have been caught…spotted grunter, kob, garrick, shad…at all the usual good spots.

Although it can get windy, it is very quiet and out of season on the Wild Coast right now – a great time to get away and find your own small corner and catch some fish.

In the meantime we are on Facebook right HERE, we run a YouTube Channel right HERE.

Summer gamefish season starts at Bazaruto

Hey brother Sean…itĀ“s been a long time but that time of the year is finally upon us!

Been out for the last 5 days and absolutely stunning, hereĀ“s the first of a couple reports for the sardine…

Cheers mate,

Summer Game fish showing up @ Bazaruto…

After a really mild and windless winter it started to warm up really good in early September and everyone out there is happy to see that the game fishing is picking up steadily. Nice size wahoo are arriving, some good cuda up to 25 kg are being caught, there as been excellent plugging for GT“s and Yellowfin are all over the place.

image

My boys on Vamizi had Kevin and Jared Goodard fishing with them the last three days on their first visit to the archipelago. Having caught / released 44 game fish in those 3 days including YFT, wahoo, cuda, natal snoek, rainbow runner, GT“s, Yellowspotted kingfish, bonitos and skipjack, they were delighted with their light tackle efforts.

I was running the Triton for Carl Jankowitz the last 5 days and between Marlin fishing we did a bit of plugging and got some GT“s on stickbait and had some good wahoo and YFT as a by catch on the lures.

Great to see an early summer bringing it on….

South Africa’s best surfers head for Vic Bay

South Africa’s Best SurfersĀ head for Vic Bay Ready For Final Leg of Quiksilver Takes One To Know One Series

Victoria Bay, Southern Cape – South Africa’s best open men and junior surfers will soon be making their way to Victoria Bay in the Southern Cape to compete in the final leg of the Quiksilver Takes One To Know One series. The event is the third of a three-part series and will take place on the 20th and 21st of September at the popular and picturesque point break setting of Victoria Bay. The event is a 3A Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour event that offers R30 000 in prize money.

With two of the three events already completed at Long Beach, Cape Town and Umdloti, KZN, the final stage in Victoria Bay is set to attract some top level competitive surfing. David Van Zyl of Durban North put on an impressive performance in Cape Town to take out his first open mens victory while Beyrick De Vries of Umhlanga Rocks stole the show in Umdloti and was crowned the KZN north coast champion. Both Van Zyl and De Vries won’t have it all their own way in Victoria Bay with the likes of Slade Prestwich (Durban), Michael February (Kommetjie), Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffreys Bay) and Dan Redman (Durban North) looking to impress and take home some silverware. De Vries has been focussed on the ASP Prime Tour and believes that the event will be a nice breather in between his hectic international schedule; Ā he said, ā€œI can’t wait to get to Vic Bay, have a few heats with the boys and just have a good time down there. The local guys have been surfing really well and I can’t wait to battle it out in some fun waves on the point.”

In the U20 junior division Diran Zakarian of Melkbosstrand will be keen to repeat his previous result in Umdloti where he performed a series of radical manoeuvres to win the junior division final. He will be up against rivals Slade Prestwich (Durban North), Jarred Veldhuis (Kommetjie), Shane Sykes (Salt Rock) and Matthew McGillivray (Jeffreys Bay).

The series has offered a total of R90 000 in prize money as well as some incredible prizes from sponsors DRIFT CAMERA’S, TECHNIBLOCK SUNSCREEN, SCULLCANDY HEADPHONES, ZIGZAG SURFING MAGAZINE and RED BULL.

Quiksilver’s Marketing and Sales Manager Dane Patterson has been very happy with the series and looks forward to the final event in Victoria Bay, saying, ā€œWe have seen a really good response from the surf community, the series has been welcomed with open arms. It is the perfect platform for South African surfers to gain a competitive edge and it’s a good stepping stone to bigger things. Let’s hope that the surf delivers for the final event.ā€

Scenes from Shelley Beach

Scenes from Shelley Beach

The following gallery of pics were shot at the Shelley Beach Ski-Boat Club, or Sonny Evans Small Craft Harbour – as it was known since it’s inception, down in Shelley Beach, this week.

Many goings on can be observed here each dayĀ Ā – between the recreational and commercial fishermen, the shark cage divers, the ocean safaris, fishing charters and skippers training…and it’s the NSRI Base for the south coast area.

Spectators are welcome – each morning the natural ampitheatre of Shelley Beach hosts a stream of onlookers (no parking on the slipway!)
