Sardine News Update – Umhlanga Coastline

Sardine News Update – Umhlanga Coastline

“Check now, bro — look how close they’ve come!” That’s the cry from the shoreline this morning as the main body of sardines pushed right up against Umhlanga. Black patches shimmered just offshore, shoals so thick they turned the water silver. Boats moved in alongside, confirming what everyone could see: this is the real deal.

It’s a spectacular sight — sardines everywhere, moving in tight formation, the ocean alive with motion. This bodes well for the next few days. The wind is forecast to ease, though tomorrow’s swell will be heavy: 2.5 meters at 16 seconds. That may challenge the netters, but Durban Bay offers shelter, and Addington Beach could well be the next hotspot.

For Durban locals, this is the moment they’ve been waiting for. Meanwhile, reports from Karl in Coffee Bay suggest the birds have cleared out — a sure sign the shoals there are finally on the move north. If so, those Coffee Bay sardines should reach us by the weekend, adding to the frenzy already unfolding.

This looks like the main body of the run — a concentrated surge of fish, with more still streaming behind. It’s the kind of pulse that can linger for weeks, keeping netters, anglers, and spectators on high alert.

And while the shoals race north, The Sardine News team is stationed in Mtunzini, spotlighting lodges and tourism gems as part of our AI SEO GEO tour. It’s a beautiful base, but make no mistake — our spies are everywhere, tracking sardines from Port Shepstone to Durban. Nets already went in today at Sandspit before the wind picked up, proving the action is real.

Stay tuned, like and subscribe — the sardine run is firing, and we’ll keep you updated every step of the way.
