NSRI Issues Stern Warning About Pending Sea Conditions

NSRI Issues Stern Warning About Pending Sea Conditions: Craig Lambinon and the NSRI have the following statement and announcement to make.

(0:01) Craig Lambinon, NSRI spokesperson, Wednesday the 22nd of May. (0:06) NSRI National Safety Alert. (0:09) NSRI in cooperation with police, maritime authorities, (0:13) disaster risk management and the emergency services (0:15) are appealing to boaters, sailors, paddlers, bathers, anglers and coastal hikers (0:21) to be aware of a South African Weather Service’s warning (0:25) alerting to rough sea conditions and big waves (0:27) along the West Coast coastline, Western Cape coastline, (0:32) South Cape coastline and potentially extending beyond (0:35) for the next few days and into the coming weekend.
(0:38) We are appealing to public and to the maritime community (0:41) to follow South African Weather Service’s weather alerts. (0:45) The South African Weather Service’s forecast rough sea conditions (0:48) may also be affected by the full moon spring tide (0:51) that peaks on Thursday the 23rd of May, (0:54) bringing the normal daily two high tides and normal daily two low tides (0:58) to be higher than normal at high tide and to be lower than normal at low tide. (1:04) Spring tide may cause stronger than normal rip currents (1:07) and areas that are not normally affected by waves at high tide (1:10) may be engulfed by waves during the spring high tide.
(1:15) Caution is advised and we appeal to public members (1:18) and to the maritime community to have safety top of mind. (1:22) Anglers should note high tide times (1:25) and stay clear from the shoreline during the two daily high tides. (1:30) Anglers should avoid crossing to islands along the coastline (1:33) during the low tide to fish (1:35) as these islands can be cut off from mainland during high tide.
(1:40) Coastal hikers should not try to cross at river miles (1:43) where currents can be particularly strong during the outgoing tide (1:46) and do not try to cross through hiking trails (1:49) that are close to the shoreline during high tide (1:52) where spring high tide can cut off shoreline hiking trails. (1:57) Boaters, sailors and paddlers should wear their life jackets (2:00) while their craft and or their vessels are underway (2:03) and to wear life jackets during rough sea conditions. (2:07) Always have safety equipment at the ready.
(2:11) For enhanced safety, download and use the NSRI’s free SafeTracks smartphone application. (2:17) We emphasize the importance of safety during these conditions. (2:21) Exercise caution and prioritize your safety and the safety of those around you.
(2:28) Let’s keep each other safe.

Another Perfect Storm hits Maputo

Another Perfect Storm hits Maputo March 24

Another Perfect Storm hits Maputo

Another Perfect Storm hits Maputo: 23 and 24 March saw another perfect storm hit Maputo. This is after Mother Nature recently unleashed her fury on Mozambique – starting with Cyclone Filipo. Hitting into Inhassoro up north, then Vilankulos, and the islands. And then creating the perfect storm conditions for what happened down in Maputo next. I have been present through one of these amazing storms. You can read that story on The Sardine News here.

Following in the wake of Cyclone Filipo’s record speed run across Mozambique, Filipo left a huge low pressure hovering over southern Mozambique and Mpumalanga in South Africa. This moisture-rich air simply unloaded its entire payload. Over an 84-hour solid rain period.

Maputo

Maputo lives on a drainage system built in the Portuguese era. That was a very long time ago. And with the population explosion in Maputo since the 70s, the infrastructure cannot cope.

This is the result…

Explanation

Over to Duarte to explain…

Basically it’s a massive low-pressure system that has moved in after Filipo and affecting the whole of southern Mozambique mostly with massive rains and mostly in the Maputo area where it rained very intensely for like 84 hours straight and seeing the drainage system is what everyone knows to be it´s just gone crazy and lots of damage, schools are closed, etc etc and hopefully this will not chain up into a cholera outbreak…
Up in Bazaruto we have had a on and off rain but not intense but windy and jus miserable weather at the moment – I have clients here for a week now and only managed to fish a few hours during two days in very messy sea, water still very murky due to debris from Filipo and recent thundershowers and obviously not a great bite with such a low-pressure system.
This low-pressure system which is called Invest 95S was said, a few days ago that, could potentially turn into a cyclone but it has not but still lurking around although conditions have improved last few days but forecast of rain, overcast weather and wind up until the 6th of April.
A further cyclone as developed over the last few days in the Indian Ocean although still very far from Africa´s East coast, this category 1 cyclone as been named Neville and we are watching it with hawk eyes!
It’s a major @#$%^& up…. This poor country does not need all this shit bro!

The perfect storm in Maputo last night

Storm in Maputo

The perfect storm in Maputo last night

The weather and swell forecasters never had a clue. Forecasts for the Maputo zone were favourable all week. There were signs of some menace as the forecasters jumpbled weather windows around, but nothing really stuck out. Not even on the synoptics. All the elements in place – surprise being the main one, for the perfect storm in Maputo last night.

And we were on our way back from Pomene, 290 Nm north, when we drove straight into it!

Luckily our vessel, the MSC Albatross, was built for this shit, and we were able to ride into Inhaca with salt soaked grace. Right in the middle of the 70 knots recorded in Maputo. The twin 330hp Volvo Pentas and 15 metres of semi displacement purity sailed in just fine, at 25 knots, we were flying along with the east wind.

We survived just fine, we are always ready for this type of phenomenen, but the statistics are not good for some…

Check the gallery, with the bad news following it…

Then we have a video too…

And then the very bad news…a few boats were lost too, including this work boat operating in the channel. One person is presumed missing so far. The boat capsized in the wild seas, spilled it’s crew and washed up on Ave da Marginal across the front of Maputo. Others were rescued but the toll will only be tallied as the day goes on.
