Pumping Surf For Off The Lip Movember Surf Jam
Llandudno, Cape Town – Saturday the 1st of November saw surfers hit the beach for the Off The Lip Movember Surf Jam. Over 45 participants were greeted by clean 4 feet surf at Llandudno Lifesaving Club, the perfect setting for an event of this nature. Shaven upper lips, old-school surfboards and seventies dress up was the order of the day. The event was staged to create awareness and raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and other men’s health issues. Quiksilver, the event organisers, is a major partner and supporter of the Movember foundation and decided to stage this event for the first time in the Cape. Jacob Mellish from Somerset West, now living in Llandudno, put on a fine display of stylish and flowing surfing on an old twin fin surfboard to win the title.
After eight six-man heats had been surfed with the traditional beach start in play; a final consisting of six surfers with the day’s top scores took to the icy Cape waters. Mellish managed to pick up some great waves in the tricky conditions to take top honours, he was followed closely by Capetonians Neil Zietsman, Luke Christy-Smith and Ike Forsyth who finished in second, third and fourth place, respectively. Durban’s Brandon Jackson claimed fifth place while the only goofy-footer in the final, Kyle Lane, ended up in sixth position. Novelty prizes went to Neil Zietsman for biggest wipe-out, Brandon Jackson for best 360, Jarred Veldhuis for best floater, Matt Davis for best layback, Kyle Lane for the best vertical manoeuvre, Luke Christy-Smith for the best barrel ride and Tasha Mentasti for best Mo Sista.
Good old seventies surf rock ’n’ roll created the vibe and legendary surfers Tich Paul and Gavin Rudolph were on hand to judge and make sure that the style and surfing was on point. Quiksilver’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Dane Patterson, was very pleased with the outcome of the event, “We couldn’t have asked for a better day, it was a good event, all for a good cause. We’re very happy to be able to support Movember and would like to thank the surfers and locals for coming out and being a part of this positive campaign.”
The next Movember surf event will be held at Beach Bums in Durban on the 22nd of November. For more information about Movember and to register and start your fund raising visit www.movember.com. To purchase Movember merchandise and support a good cause visit www.boardriders.co.za/
