HDPE recycled Whale Shark keyring

R100.00

A cool little whale shark keyring made from HDPE plastic recycled off the beaches at Pomene and Tofo, in Mozambique. Where plastic just lies everywhere, and NOBODY is taking responsibility. In any meaningful way.

Description

HDPE recycled Whale Shark keyring

If you buy one of these little whale shark keyring guys, either from our shop, or from Fatima’s Nest in Tofo, Mozambique, you are directly helping to clean the beaches and estuaries around here. The whale shark is made from HDPE bottle tops and caps, collected from the beaches here in Mozambique. Where we are teaching local and grassroots communities to easily recycle this friendly HDPE plastic.

HDPE

Never degrades. But is infinitely recyclable. And is cheaper to recycle than to produce from oil. If it is collected, cleaned and sorted, it has financial value.

If it is melted correctly, and upcycled, amazing value is achieved. The proceeds from the sales of these whale sharks are used to buy up every piece of HDPE we can find. We are paying 50 Meticals per bag, about a dollar, and it’s working great. It is really difficult to fill a bag of tops and caps, in Tofo today.

Postage included

The whale shark keyring sells for 200 Mets in Mozambique (at Fatima’s in Tofo), but we have to mail them to you so, in South Africa, the price is R100 per piece.

Please, be patient, as your whale shark crosses through the border from Mozambique into South Africa, and makes its way to a post office, and then swims all the way to wherever you might be.

At this point, whale sharks are not available for overseas or foreign markets. Rather, support us on our Patreon Page, or at this link you will find other ways to get involved in our impromptu Plastic Fantastic tour of Southern Africa.
