Barra breaks again – Feb 2021

Barra breaks again - Mozambique

Barra breaks again – Feb 2021

Barra breaks again – this past few days and weeks has seen some wild wet season weather patterns that are typical of a February around Southern Africa.

Boisterous! February is actually the source of a tonne of swell. The only thing is that it goes in all directions!? And when the stars line up for surfers, this happens at the miles-long sandspit that is Barra.

The video below features a few clips shot by Lalaland Africa’s Chad Leavitt. Who never misses these swells. Luckily he lives there hey?

Anyway, a previous video I posted of Barra, created quite a scene way back when. It was actually one of my top-performing videos and many comments went along the lines of – “Hey man if you show people this stuff you gonna get crowds”. Type thing. I just have to laugh because even if you drop a few hundred good surfers on this miles long lineup, they will all get barrelled. And worked. It is a very difficult place to surf as it gets bigger. At 6 to 8 ft there are atom bombs exploding on the sand. The place has a current flying down it at a huge rate of knots. You can hardly walk in the shallows from it. Many of the waves closeout. It is such a long walk back to the top. Can take 20 minutes or more.

But it’s the manageable days that really count. When the sun is blazing. Blue Mozam skies. And it’s like 4 ft and everyone manages to get out. These are the days. Where on one of my many runs back up to the top, I pass surfers, my mates, lying in puddles of exhaustion. Moaning at their punishment. As perfect wave after perfect wave run by unchallenged by anyone. Yes Dave and Aladinho, I am talking about you guys!

Lalaland Africa

Chad Leavitt, who secreted these pics and video to us, runs the enchanted Lalaland, on the beach, across at Tofo. Where he has his very own set of waves, spread out in front of his place. They even have names! But if you get yourself all that way up there, get in touch and let’s see if we can get you into Lalaland. Very reasonable and really a perfect hideaway. With your very own waves!

You can find your way to Lalaland online on The Sardine News, under accommodation.

PRESS RELEASE: DOLPHINS WITHOUT LIFE FOUND IN THE NATIONAL PARK OF THE ARCHIPELAGO DO BAZARUTO, FEBRUARY 22, 2021

Dead dolphins in the shallows of Bazaruto Island

PRESS RELEASE DOLPHINS WITHOUT LIFE FOUND IN THE NATIONAL PARK OF THE ARCHIPELAGO DO BAZARUTO, FEBRUARY 22, 2021

Another very sad instance of dolphins beaching. They stranded themselves in the shallows of the Bazaruto Archipelago, near Bazaruto Island, recently. Investigations will be conducted into why the cetaceans got themselves into this state. – Xonalanga

  • The Ministry of Land and Environment, through the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) informs that on the morning of February 21, 2021 in the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, 32 dolphins of the species Stenella longirostris hit the coast, 25 of which lost their lives at the site and 7 were rescued by the Park and taken back to the sea.

Of the 25 animals killed, 11 are adult males and 14 are females, with 12 adults, one (1) juvenile and one (1) child.

An investigation is underway to investigate the causes of death. From the expert work done, it was found that the dolphins did not show any signs of injury.

The viscera were extracted with the intention of checking if they had consumed anything strange that had caused their death, but nothing was found with the naked eye. The National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), through the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, will send the 25 samples to the laboratory for further analysis.

In order to monitor the status of the 7 animals saved and returned to the sea, the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park is conducting patrols on all the coasts of the islands that make up the Park. Until the afternoon of February 22, there were no signs that the 7 animals had returned to the coast, which increases the chances that they have survived so far.

Following the implementation of the protocol in force in the Conservation Areas for the management of animals found dead, the bodies of the 25 dolphins were incinerated.

The National Administration of Conservation Areas informs that it will update the public on the details of the investigation work now underway, in order to determine the causes of death of those marine mammals. In the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park (PNAB), in addition to the occurrence of marine mammals such as dugongs, whales, dolphins and others, provided by the combination of shallow and deep waters, as well as the availability of nutrients and tranquility in the area, occurrence of 180 species of birds, 45 of reptiles, 16 of land mammals, 500 of marine and coastal mollusks, and 2000 species of fish. The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park (PNAB), located in the province of Inhambane, has an area of 1,430 km2 and was created on May 25, 1971, being the first marine park in the country. (x)

The Brucifire Surf Reports 2021 Season

The Brucifire Surf Reports 2021 Season

Well, it was a helluva lot of fun putting this quasi-live performance together with Brucifire this 2021 season of waves at JBay. A star-studded cast complimented the reporting and ranting. The odd sprinkling of beer and herbs gave the flavour and many laughs were posted.

Featuring

The waves just kept coming too!

Bruce’s authentic camera shake was augmented with some donated and some stolen clips, controversy thrown in for free, many historic references and frames, some seriously cool artwork and commentary from a wide range of characters about the scene.

Lou Reed donated the theme track.

Challenges

Well, the first obstacle was getting the echo off the Skype call. In the beginning, we thought it was cool but it wasn’t and after a few attempts, managed to get that right.

We never actually went live though. We did the recording live, if that counts. Bruce’s Skype feed came into my OBS Studio switcher, and we did assemble like a live show. This was real fun. And real challenging. But we never lost our cool with each other once and I think we managed a good 20 recordings or so. Which then were made into the Brucifire Surf Report for Season 2021â€Ĥ

The Brucifire Surf Reports 2021 Season in JBay mainlyâ€Ĥ

Yip, it ain’t all about JBay as Bruce took to the hills every now and then. It’s a natural way to stay sane from the workings of living in JBay. The Karoo, and the Kei feature.

We sure hope you enjoy the playlist. And you can look forward to another season of Brucifire Surf Reports as we move towards another JBay winter. After summer that is. Damn!

But ok, please spread the word, share this website with your friends. The shop will be opening soon!

VIDEO: Fishing the water line with Bongani Pitoyi on the Niteshift

STORY: January 2021 by The Sardine News

And so we have a story. A web story! This new fangled format from Google is a go at TikTok and Instagram and Facebook and whoever else’s – stories!

Anyway, I gave it a go, and this months roundup, is included right here below, as our very first Google Web Story.

The publishing interface was clunky and boring but when the UI guys get their shit together, it will be easy enough to use. Just another damn editor to learn!

The format can take video and gifs and the like, but for our very first effort, we just highlighted our best stories from Jan (and a bot of Dec 2020), with stills, logos and captions. And hey! Guess what? It ain’t too bad as a first time result.

Give it a go right here…

Please let me know if it did not work too good for you – your feedback is invaluable, always.

A quick gallery for the search engines and in case the Story above did not work in your browser/device.

February prognosis

February will hopefully see less rain. BUT. And it’s a big but – it is still slap bang in the middle of cyclone season and ANYTHING can and happen.

However, with so much rain that we have had so far, we can look to February with hope that the month will be more useable and that the rain will slowly slow to a stop.

That all said, the winding east winds coupled with the winding current, kind of flies the brown water away in no time now. And so the blue water is not too far away at all.

The brown water line has been producing fish and will continue to be the place to hang out for boats and skis whilst the phenomenon prevails a while longer.
