JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA – Next Five Invited Surfers Named
Jeffreys Bay – The next 5 surfers invited to compete in the JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA have been announced, and they are a mix of experience, talent and Supertubes know-how.
The JBU Supertrial is always a hotly-contested event, throwing out a wildcard into the JBay Open as first prize. The invite-only format of this tournament sees some very talented South African surfers putting their hands up to get a possible slot into the contest, but there are only 20 surfers invited in total. The first prize wildcard is much-coveted, as the JBay Open is the only World Surf League Championship Tour contest in the country, and to get into the event could launch a surfer’s professional career.
A former World Championship Tour surfer, Ricky Basnett was excited when he got the call that he had been invited to surf in the contest.
Formerly from The Bluff in Durban, Ricky now calls St Francis Bay home, and has been surfing the local waves as well as putting some serious time in at Supertubes.
“I’m stoked to be invited and totally amped to go shred some good JBay,” said Ricky when he heard that he had been included. “I just hope that the waves are really good, so we can all enjoy some perfect waves with only 4 guys out at a time. It has been a while since I’ve put on a contest jersey as well, so we’ll see how that goes, but nothing beats perfect Supers”
Sean Holmes is another surfer who needs little introduction when it comes to competing at Supertubes. Sean has had a string of successful results at Supers as a wildcard surfer, including beating previous world champions like Kelly Slater and the late Andy Irons. An excellent tube rider and an exciting, spontaneous surfer, Sean is always great to watch at perfect Supertubes.
Other invites include WQS campaigners Matt McGillivray, Dylan Lightfoot and Davey Van Zyl.
Matt is a talented young natural-footer who calls Jeffreys Bay home. He is currently competing to great success on the World Qualifying Series and has a bright future ahead of him. Dylan is another local surfer and a former event champion who has been training hard and competing successfuly on the WQS as well. Davey Van Zyl has represented South Africa at both the ISA World Junior Championships and the ISA World Surfing Games. He is the current South African men’s champion, having won the title at the 50th SA Surfing Championships in Richards Bay last year.
The waiting period for the JBU Supertrial is 1-12 June, with one full day needed to surf the event to completion.
The JBU Supertrial forms part of the JBay Winterfest, the sporting and music festival that will take place in Jeffreys Bay from 6-17 July.
The JBU Supertrial is presented by RVCA. Co-sponsors include Monster Energy, Stance, Oakley.
Wavescape is the media partner.
