N1 Maputo through Xai Xai still closed

*Press Release No. 12*
*Maputo, January 30, 2026*
*Updated at: 6:00 PM – Local Time*

*Traffic reopened only on the section between 3 de Fevereiro and Incoluana, on the N1 road, Maputo province*

Traffic was reopened, this Friday, January 30th, in a conditional manner, *for all types of vehicles on the N1 road, on the section between 3 de Fevereiro and Incoluana, in Maputo province*.

*HOWEVER*, the National Roads Administration (ANE, IP) clarifies that at this moment *the N1 road remains impassable in the city of Xai-Xai, and there is currently no land connection between Maputo and Xai-Xai*.

*At this moment, there is only a land connection from Maputo to the districts of Bilene, Chóckwe, Massingir and Limpopo*.

In the province of Gaza, the following roads remain impassable:
• N1 between the bridge over the Limpopo River and the lower part of the city of Xai-Xai/Anguluzane (entire lower part of Xai-Xai).

• N220: Chissano – Chibuto.

• N221: Chibuto – Chicualacuala.

• R448 between Manjangue and Macarretane Dam.

• R856: Guijá – Chókwe.

• NC: Magul – Tlawene.

To better manage traffic and ensure safety and avoid potential blockages resulting from demand, a stop-and-go traffic system will be adopted, as well as the interruption of nighttime vehicle traffic between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM, effective from February 2, 2026 (Monday), for a period of 30 days.

ANE, IP, appeals to all motorists to:
1. Avoid nighttime driving;
2. Respect the signage placed along the stretch;
3. Avoid speeding;

4. For motorists traveling from Maputo to other destinations through downtown Xai-Xai, and vice versa, we recommend rescheduling your trips, given that the N1 road in Xai-Xai (Anguluzane) remains impassable, thus avoiding congestion and the risk of accidents.

ANE, IP, also informs that, even after the reopening of traffic, road improvement works will continue, meaning that the circulation of machinery and other construction equipment will continue. We urge drivers to exercise greater caution, especially on the stretch between 3 de Fevereiro and Incoluana on the N1 road.
