Sardine Run Spearfishing action by Jason Heyne

Sardine Run Spearfishing action by Jason Heyne

How about this for some serious Sardine Run Spearfishing action, reported in by Jason Heyne?

“Diving conditions have been great this week.

Loads of winter fish are holding in the shallows. Bad news is a big south west is blowing already and will continue through Saturday bringing 3m swell from the Cape. Wind drops off late Saturday with a light offshore blowing Sunday morning and a 1.6m swell running. There was great viz both north and south coasts today. So it looks like Sunday may be diveable if you don’t mind a bit of surf. Try hang as shallow as possible to intercept dagas, yellowtail, garrick and snoek. Some big king mackerel have been coming out in the deep. Natal champs has been postponed due to the weather. As always dive safe and straight spears.”

Thank you Jason!

Spear fishing report by Jason Heyne

Spear fishing report by Jason Heyne

This weekly KZN spear fishing report by Jason Heyne really is inspiring. The fish are all right out there, we just got to try harder!!!

Over to Jason…

“The sea conditions this week have been average with a bit of swell.
Even with the north east on the sea this afternoon (Friday) it was still good both north and south coast. There’s a light offshore Saturday with a 1.2m swell running and even flatter on Sunday at 0.9m also with a light offshore wind. There is good viz on the south and north coasts. Garrick and snoek are wild on the south coast and starting to show on the lower north coast as well. Some large king mackerel are around and apparently some wahoo! The sardines are still down at Port St Johns and only a significant drop in sea temperature will get them coming up the coast. Make sure you find plenty excuses to go diving because this weekend is going to be epic! As always dive safe and straight spears. “

Thank you Jason!

KZN Spearfishing report

KZN Spearfishing Report

“KZN Spearfishing Report” by Jason Heyne

Once again, the ever consistent Sardine correspondent Jason has compiled a gallery and synopsis of what has been happening in the water up and down the KZN coastline.

The sea conditions this week have been average after the first big winter cold front with game fish being sporadic.

“The predicted east hardly blew today (Friday). An off shore wind with a 1.5m swell is predicted for Saturday with the swell picking up in the afternoon and some large swell on the lower south coast. The swell jacks Sunday with a light offshore in the morning. So it looks like Saturday is the day. There was viz reported on the south and north coast today. Garrick are thick on the south coast with some bomber snoek patrolling the back line”

As always dive safe and straight spears.

Double Spearfishing Report for KZN

Double Spearfishing Report for KZN

Jason Heyne comes through with a double whammy of a Spearfishing report for the last two weeks…

“Sorry cell was stolen last week Friday

We have had epic diving conditions this week the bad news is the 1st big cold front of winter is pushing through now as I write this. Buster south westerly Saturday with big swell the wind drops off on Sunday but the sea probably won’t have settled enough for a dive. Good news is the winter gamefish run is on! Decent fish have been shot the last two weeks. As always dive safe and straight spears.”

How spearos are born – short story

How spearos are born – short story

It was 1988. Four spearos were about to be born.

It was a type 1A winters day at Sunwich Port on the Natal Lower South Coast, and the waves had been there all morning, but now the tide was moving in and it was time. A time I had been subconsciously known was coming, but the void waiting out there, was overwhelming. A time I had mentally prepared for, but the fear of this time was peppered all over my soul. I had seen the sharks on Protea. I had seen them off the mouth. I had seen them at Chakas, Shad Lane and behind the nets at Umtentweni, the point at Seapark, the backline of Idomba. I had seen them everywhere.

Their absolute authority under the water. Their cunningness. Theit strength and speed. Their teeth.

Sharks.

Having one swim by whilst sitting on a surfboard can also be ok, as long as you can see it.

But I had by this time yearned so, to see what was going on underneath the surface of the ocean that we had been sitting on top of, not submerged in, our whole lives. A boat. A board. A ski. Ok, we had always caught crayfish in the shallows, but the fear was tasting very real now, as we decided to give this spearfishing a go.
