Video: Introducing the MYDO SS Spoon range

This is the MYDO SS Spoon Shad in 3.2mm Stainless Steel specification 316 marine grade. Made in South Africa available at http://thesardine.co.za/mydo/

Video: Introducing the MYDO SS Spoon range

The MYDO SS Spoon range is an adaptation of Brian Davey’s original set of MYDO Spoons. Changing the base material from lead to stainless steel made for many advantages:

  • lighter in the water, they bounce off rocks much better than lead spoons
  • lazer cut makes for intricate detail and design
  • the spoons are always shiny
  • they come out perfect every time

The MYDO SS Spoon range run from the baby – The Tarpon, to the Shad, the Snoek, Tuna, Couta and Dogtooth. The Dogtooth tops out the range at a whopping 3 and a half ounces, which can be sent to the horizon or the bottom with equal ease.

All the MYDO SS Spoons can be cast, trolled or jigged through the water column. For an extra advantage, squich some sardine or other bait into the holes in the spoon. Juicing I call it. And it increases your strike rate phenomenally.

The following video takes you through the range with an explanation of each feature as we go.

KZN East Coast Spearfishing report

KZN East Coast Spearfishing report by Jason Heyne

Well the week so far hasn’t been good with big swell pounding the coast. A big south west has just arrived in Durban tonight (Friday) and will blow up to 35 knts bringing with it even bigger swell up to 4m. The wind dies down Saturday night. Swell drops off a bit to 1.8m Sunday with an offshore blowing in the morning switching to a light north east later in the day. Monday looks absolutely awesome with 1.1m swell running and a light offshore in the morning switching to a light south west in the afternoon. There was viz both south and north today. Monday is the go day! The zululand boys have been getting some quality fish. With this early winter swell and cold front the winter fish should be arriving en masse on the south coast. I have had reliable reports of big sardine action in the kei. As always dive safe and straight spears.””

Thank you Jason Heyne!

The MYDO Billplate

The MYDO Billplate on a #4 MYDO Baitswimmer

The MYDO Billplate came along way into The Mydo’s development. Brian Davey, the inventor of the baitswimmer, came to realise that he could achieve more depth and action, and introduce flash – by creating a polished and bevelled stainless steel bill plate.

This billplate slots directly onto #2, #3 , #4 and #4.5. It fits snug around the pulling eye, and the wire leader thereon keeps it in place.

Aside from the aforementioned benefits, the MYDO Billplates also hold your MYDO Superskirt onto the trace during the mighty runs a couta or sailfish are famous for. Fished with or without a MYDO Superskirt – Billplates are a boon to your offering.

Great fishing knot page…

Great fishing knot page…

We came across a great fishing knot page on the interweb. It was a page within http://www.fishing-nc.com/, a really comprehensive fishing website. Follow the link below and check out how they do things in North Carolina, when they not voting.

http://www.fishing-nc.com/fishing-knots.php

The fishing there is actually quite similar to ours here in southern Africa, albeit quite a number of species are endemic to either place. Imagine we got those giant tarpon here?! Other similarities include the mangrove and swamp systems, water temperature – and the weather. We are talking about the East Coast weather that is!

The collection of knots they got going on their web page is impressive and applicable to the needs of our light tackle anglers here in Southern Africa.

Fishing with the MYDO Luck Shot MINI

Fishing with the MYDO Luck Shot MINI

Fishing with the MYDO Luck Shot MINI puts you way ahead of the old conventional drop shot rig. The Luck Shot MINI really moves. Side to side, veering as you twitch the tip of your rod. Different twitches and retrieves produce total different results.

Jerk and twitch for violent direction changes.

Crank on the surface and it acts like a surface plug as the perpendicular face to the pulling eye breaks the surface and again darts from one side to the next, sometimes penetrating the surface and dragging a kona load of bubbles behind it.

A slow retrieve gives you a swimming lure that behaves like a swimming plug.

Except, the Luck Shot MINI is rigged with a solid single hook, that faces  upwards, like a drop shot, as opposed a trailing treble or combination of trebles hanging below the lure. This almost always damages and often kills your catch, no live bat and no release possible. The single hook of the MYDO Luck Shot MINI hooks the fish politely in the top jaw or corner of it’s mouth. Easy release. Minimal damage.

The two sizes make for adaptability to any conditions. The lures cast really well, the #1 weighing in at 0.7 Oz, and the #2 at 1.7 Oz. You can choose all kinds of combinations with the two heads. When the offshore is blowing, you can fish the lighter head with a bigger hook and a 7 inch split tail plastic, for lifelike swimming action that really works wll in the top 30 cm of water in the surf zone. Rigged like this you get an amazing snakey slithery swimming action – and when things get hot, crank it on the surface for a ‘better than a plug’ action.

If you have serious current or wind to contend with, rig heavier with the #2. Huge casts and deep water, with the same characteristics and the #1.
