Fishing with the MYDO Luck Shot MINI

Fishing with the MYDO Luck Shot MINI

Fishing with the MYDO Luck Shot MINI puts you way ahead of the old conventional drop shot rig. The Luck Shot MINI really moves. Side to side, veering as you twitch the tip of your rod. Different twitches and retrieves produce total different results.

Jerk and twitch for violent direction changes.

Crank on the surface and it acts like a surface plug as the perpendicular face to the pulling eye breaks the surface and again darts from one side to the next, sometimes penetrating the surface and dragging a kona load of bubbles behind it.

A slow retrieve gives you a swimming lure that behaves like a swimming plug.

Except, the Luck Shot MINI is rigged with a solid single hook, that faces  upwards, like a drop shot, as opposed a trailing treble or combination of trebles hanging below the lure. This almost always damages and often kills your catch, no live bat and no release possible. The single hook of the MYDO Luck Shot MINI hooks the fish politely in the top jaw or corner of it’s mouth. Easy release. Minimal damage.

The two sizes make for adaptability to any conditions. The lures cast really well, the #1 weighing in at 0.7 Oz, and the #2 at 1.7 Oz. You can choose all kinds of combinations with the two heads. When the offshore is blowing, you can fish the lighter head with a bigger hook and a 7 inch split tail plastic, for lifelike swimming action that really works wll in the top 30 cm of water in the surf zone. Rigged like this you get an amazing snakey slithery swimming action – and when things get hot, crank it on the surface for a ‘better than a plug’ action.

If you have serious current or wind to contend with, rig heavier with the #2. Huge casts and deep water, with the same characteristics and the #1.

The Mydo in Swakopmund: Leons Tackle Shop

The Mydo in Swakopmund

The Mydo in Swakopmund! Catching kob on plastics and spoons in Namibia!

The next time you are headed up the West Coast of Africa in search of bending rods and screaming reels, pop into Leons Tackle Shop in Swakopmund, and another in Henties Bay, to stock up on MYDO Luck Shots and SS Spoons.

Whilst in Henties and Swakop recently, the kob were going mad – all in the 10 to 12kg size range. Anglers were dotted up and down the gruelling coastline – this is another type of fishing that’s for sure. With the baking desert behind and the ice cold ocean in front, conditions here are harsh – but oh so worth it!

And the kob really dig it here too!

Leons has been servicing the local angler fraternity for an eternity, advice from the crew there is invaluable and contemporay. The fish seem to move up and down the coast in huge shoals so it’s common to see well rigged 4×4 vehicles tearing up and down that famous coastal road all day and night long. So knowing where the fish are and what they are feeding on is vital to the success of your efforts.

Hit Leons and get the inside information!

EddlesGas and Tackle for MYDOs in Cape Town

EddlesGas and Tackle for MYDOs in Cape Town

EddlesGas and Tackle for MYDOs in Cape Town. It has taken some time but The Mydo is slowly winning over some support in the Cape areas. The latest shop to stock The Mydo is EddlesGas and Tackle, situated at…

ERF143864 Main Rd, Retreat, Cape Town, 7965, South Africa…
where highly knowledgeable and experienced Werner, will put you right on top of the fish, with all the right gear.
Eddles (as it is has been fondly known for aeons) has a comprehensive stock of tackle catering to the whole lot, but mainly sport anglers in the Cape Peninsula area. Werner is an avid spinning angler and knows the region like the back of his hand. A very helpful attitude rounds off a great fishing tackle shop experience.
EddlesGas and Tackle are the first shop in the Cape area to stock the impressive and already proven MYDO SS Spoon range. They have the entire spread in stock:

The SS Shad is one of our most popular spoons and catches all kinds of fish from shad to tigerfish. For MYDOs in Cape Town head on over to EddlesGas and Tackle.

The spoons work differently with different retrieves and twitches. Crank one on the surface and water comes flying out the holes like a little jet ski, leaving a trail of smoke and bubbles in its wake that would make a jet ski proud.
Slow down your crank for mid water  flash and action.
Twitch the tip of your rod at even slower speeds to get radical directional change every time. This is the MYDO methodology – to make the lure swim like an injured or fleeing fish – and not just straight ahead like regular spoons. The highest quality marine grade 316 stainless steel acts nothing like metal and lead based lures, which are sluggish and heavy, and love the rocks. The MYDO SS Spoon range in 316 stainless, bounces over rocks and reef with minimal snags, compared to conventional spoon materials. The stainless steel also makes for far more vibrance and life in the water.
Give it a try!
The spoon shapes and contours were designed in the 80’s by the legendary Brian Davey, and have been adapted to stainless steel construction now in 2015. Patents and trademarks are all in place.
Pop in at EddlesGas and Tackle to check them out, get some excellent advice from Werner, and then go catch a fish!
You can call EddlesGas and Tackle on 021-715 7900, or check out their website on http://eddlesgas.co.za.

Fishing with the MYDO Luck Shot

Fishing with the MYDO Luck Shot

Fishing with the MYDO Luck Shot.

The MYDO Baitswimmer’s many talents are easily adapted to many fishing applications and baits.

Including fishing with plastics.

Plastics have come a long way and are now available looking as real and flashy as a live bait. Juicing with a bit of bait increases strike rates tremendously – but how best to fish a decent plastic?

The MYDO Luck Shot.

This incredibly successful lure is fundamentally a bait swimmer with a hook, and a plastic rigged thereon.

This gives anglers an amazingly versatile lure.

Just drop it over the side of the boat and you are already in with a chance. Our first fish on the MYDO Luck Shot was caught this way. My Dad just let the lure out on the drift and bang, the SardaSarda pictured below took the bait.

Liam Gallagher hoists the very first fish caught on a MYDO LuckShot - this Sarda Sarda that took the new lure while the rod was stationery in the holder on the drift!

Catching live bait whilst fishing for marlin is always a challenge. Lures with trebles or double hook rigs damage the bait beyond repair. Often they hook the fish in the bottom jaw, as the hooks hang down below the lure. No live bait survives this. Treble hooked lures also often turn during the fight, wrecking gills and eyes simultaneously. Blood everywhere.

Not with the MYDO.

The huge single hook faces upwards and almost every time hooks the fish firmly in the corner of the jaw.

And then there is the speed! You can drag MYDO Luck Shot whilst dragging konas. 12 Knots is easy and the plastic just stays on due to the hook shaped pin that holds the plastic in place perfectly.

Fish with split tails or paddle tails – all sizes, even the huge stuff!

MYDO lures available at Beacon Bay Spar in East London

The two sizes of the MYDO Luck Shot Mini # 1

MYDO lures available at Beacon Bay Spar in East London

MYDO Lures are now available in the East London area. The huge and comprehensive tackle section of the Beacon Bay SPAR, headed up by Stuart Wilson are stocking the entire MYDO Luck Shot range.

These purpose built lures are targeted at Kob and Garrick and East London is where it’s at for these prized gamefish.
The MYDO Luck Shot Mini range (#1 and #2) also target shad and other shore and estuary caught fish.
There two types of Luck Shots. The Luck Shot Mini is designed for casting and trolling, whilst the Luck Shots, which are bigger and heavier, are designed to replace expensive swimming plug lures used for trolling, at under half the price.
The Luck Shot sizes 2 through 4, can be hauled at very high trolling speeds and are great for looking for bait whilst dragging Konas. They always hook the fish in the corner of the mouth in the top jaw. And with outsized hooks, pressure can be put on the fish. The Luck Shots do not damage the fish at all, compared to the twin treble arrangement offered by Rapalas and Halcos. With these type of configuration, the trebles almost every time damage the poor fish beyond repair, with a treble in the eye or gills. And they hook in the lower jaw as the hooks hang downwards of the lure. We all know that a fish hooked in the bottom jaw will never survive, either as a live bait, or as a candidate for tag and release. Fish singles. They are also so much easier to get out of the fish’s mouth.
The Luck Shots can also be slow trolled and the different sizes and weights mean you can fish the entire water column – watch out for those angry rockod!
Stuart can be contacted on stuart@spargs.co.za and Beacon Bay Spar is very easily found on the Beacon Bay road leading down to the beach.
