And the Fishing Republic is open in The Strand

FIshing with the Fishing Republic and Kegan Matheys at The Strand

And the Fishing Republic is open in The Strand

December is upon us, it’s fishing time – and the Fishing Republic tackle store, is newly opened in The Strand!

Operator Kegan Matheys has been literally overwhelmed with support and at the same time run off his feet. But he is holding on tight and dealing with the crowds just fine.

Kegan has dressed his shop up in False Bay style fishing tackle glam. He has loads of shark and other inedible tackle options, but his forte are the kob that swim the beaches and the bay. Literally pioneering these waters with drop shot and plastic bait fishing, you can visit Kegan for advice and direction. And even hook up a fishing trip or outing with other learner or more experienced anglers.

False Bay is a beautiful place to fish. And going with a few anglers together, makes it all the more safer and fun.

Chris Bertish Stand up Guy

It’s all fair and well being a Bertish, and crossing the Atlantic Ocean ace-out on a SUP, but when you get a song written about you, then you know you’ve made it.

And made it Chris has. He has crossed the oceans for charity and this stand up guys deserves all the support he can  get, as he nears the coast of Venezuela!

Well, he’s over half way anyway…750 odd Miles to go still.

It’s all very well documented…

EddlesGas and Tackle for MYDOs in Cape Town

EddlesGas and Tackle for MYDOs in Cape Town

EddlesGas and Tackle for MYDOs in Cape Town. It has taken some time but The Mydo is slowly winning over some support in the Cape areas. The latest shop to stock The Mydo is EddlesGas and Tackle, situated at…

ERF143864 Main Rd, Retreat, Cape Town, 7965, South Africa…
where highly knowledgeable and experienced Werner, will put you right on top of the fish, with all the right gear.
Eddles (as it is has been fondly known for aeons) has a comprehensive stock of tackle catering to the whole lot, but mainly sport anglers in the Cape Peninsula area. Werner is an avid spinning angler and knows the region like the back of his hand. A very helpful attitude rounds off a great fishing tackle shop experience.
EddlesGas and Tackle are the first shop in the Cape area to stock the impressive and already proven MYDO SS Spoon range. They have the entire spread in stock:

The SS Shad is one of our most popular spoons and catches all kinds of fish from shad to tigerfish. For MYDOs in Cape Town head on over to EddlesGas and Tackle.

The spoons work differently with different retrieves and twitches. Crank one on the surface and water comes flying out the holes like a little jet ski, leaving a trail of smoke and bubbles in its wake that would make a jet ski proud.
Slow down your crank for mid water  flash and action.
Twitch the tip of your rod at even slower speeds to get radical directional change every time. This is the MYDO methodology – to make the lure swim like an injured or fleeing fish – and not just straight ahead like regular spoons. The highest quality marine grade 316 stainless steel acts nothing like metal and lead based lures, which are sluggish and heavy, and love the rocks. The MYDO SS Spoon range in 316 stainless, bounces over rocks and reef with minimal snags, compared to conventional spoon materials. The stainless steel also makes for far more vibrance and life in the water.
Give it a try!
The spoon shapes and contours were designed in the 80’s by the legendary Brian Davey, and have been adapted to stainless steel construction now in 2015. Patents and trademarks are all in place.
Pop in at EddlesGas and Tackle to check them out, get some excellent advice from Werner, and then go catch a fish!
You can call EddlesGas and Tackle on 021-715 7900, or check out their website on http://eddlesgas.co.za.

Roosta Rollin’ at the Retro

Roosta Rollin’ at the Retro

We rolled into the Llandudno parking light, early after traveling down from Port Nolloth all night. We thought it was a fancy dress day at the beach. Liquorice all sorts were scattered around. Mexicans mainly. All droving down towards the life saving club.

We knew The Roosta was in town. With his two lovely ladies, Jo and Malia, and Llands was a good enough place to start.

Then it became clear – we had arrived on the day of the Vudu Rollin’ Retro annual event.

The waves were huge by Llandudno standards. Heaving 8 ft close outs giving way to the odd manageable peak, but the whole scene – far from manageable.

And there was The Roosta, family and all, scheduled to surf in the last heat of the day. Having not seen each other for over six months, there were a few broken and missing boards to forget about, and the party was on.

Corona beer and Jimelda Tequila were the sponsors and so the day unfolded. By the time Roosta was scheduled to paddle out, we had all quenched out thirsts nicely.

The final heat paddled out into a howling side shore and unrelenting sets. But The Roosta found himself completely at home in the wild conditions and soon had racked up the three best waves of the entire day. Including one barrel ride that will be etched into the memories of every spectator present.

An amazing event that grows in size and stature as fast the waves it is traditionally held in!

Andy Marr takes the Striped Horse

Press Release

Tuesday, 13 October 2015

Cape Town

ANDY MARR WINS STRIPED HORSE CHALLENGE BIG WAVE COMPETITION

Veteran Kommetjie charger, Andy Marr, has proven how much experience counts in big wave surfing by claiming victory in the inaugural Striped Horse Challenge presented by Zigzag in association withRVCA, Twig Surfboards and Hurricane.

As the second oldest* of the 16 big wave surfers in contention for the grand prize that includes a return ticket to Hawaii, R20 000 cash; two new Twig Surfboards and travel accessories from Hurricane, Andy Marr knows what it takes to ride the challenging peaks of Dungeons. And the experience the 41 year-old has accumulated during the countless hours he has spent charging massive waves below the Sentinel outside Hout Bay, were on display for the incredible barrel he rode on 6 August.

Cape Town photographer, Grant Scholtz claimed R5 000 for documenting Andy’s winning wave, and he shared the R10 000 prize with videographer, Dean Engela, who was also in the right place at the right time to record Andy’s ride.

This is what a few of the Striped Horse Challenge judges had to say about Andy’s winning wave:

“Even though it was a slow winter for big waves in Cape Town, this wave from Andrew Marr more then makes up for it. Andy’s style and poise under pressure to negotiate the drop, angle off the bottom and almost ride though a huge tube sets this wave apart from all the rest. Well done Andy!” – Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker

That was a defining wave in Andy’s surfing life. He did exactly what I would expect him to… He pulled in! Enough said.” – Pierre De Villiers

“I love the fact that Andy always sits way deep, and on this wave he shows style, poise and absolute commitment through a beast of a barrel!” – Ryan Butcher

Shortly after he was announced as champion at the Awards Evening at Aces ‘n Spades on Saturday,Zigzag Magazine cornered Andy to hear his thoughts on the big win.

“You know I think I was fortunate that we had a really slow winter here, because the youngsters are really pushing the barriers now,” said a clearly stoked Andy. “It’s weird that an old man can still win such a thing, you know. James Lowe, Matt Bromley, they’re our future. So ja, I was very fortunate…slow winter, lucky wave. Thanks to Striped Horse Craft Beer and Zigzag Magazine for putting everything together. Going back over to Hawaii for this upcoming season gives me the opportunity to go back and say hi to my daughter again, and my beautiful friends in Hawaii and San Francisco. It’s been almost six years since I’ve been back there and I always thought I’d go back on an El Nino year – and we’ve got one so it’s going to be a big deal!”
