Breaking Sardine News with Garry Hook and Kevin in Qora
Breaking Sardine News with Garry Hook and Kevin in Qora: after Garry Hook and I published a NO sardine report…
Kevin comes in with a cracker!
Kevin from Qora Mouth (just north of Mazeppa Bay in the Southern Transkei) describes unusual conditions this summer: very little rain, tanks at 50%, and prawns arriving three months early. Then, yesterday, he spotted thousands of gannets diving on a moving shoal of sardines, accompanied by dolphins and other predators. He emphasizes that gannets don’t follow sprats or red-eyes—they follow Natal sardines.
Kevin believes this was a pilot shoal moving north quickly, fractured but significant, and already attracting predators. By this morning, he saw many gannets heading north, suggesting the sardines have moved past his area. He’s keeping spotters along the coast to track developments and notes this could be early good news for Durban.
A direct line from the report:
“Chaps, the sardine run is on early… I’m gonna say this is a pilot shoal coming through on its way north moving quite fast.” -Kevin in Qora.
