The Cell© Goodwave Surf Contest Confirmed For 2017

New Pier, Durban – In exciting news, the South African Surfing Legends is proud to present the Cell© Goodwave, set to take place at New Pier in Durban in 2017.

The Cell© Goodwave will once again present an alternate take on the way traditional surfing events are held, and will once again become the most popular and talked-about contest on the South African surfing calendar. The Cell© Goodwave tournament has many unique aspects and components that make it a thrilling yet unconventional surfing competition.

– It is an invite-only event. There is no other way to surf the event than by an invitation. The best 32 surfers in the country will be invited to compete, and 32 alternates will be invited as well.

– The event is a one-day event, with 4 man heats and a sudden death format. The event thus comprises fifteen heats of insane high performance surfing. It has a 1-year waiting period, with the call being made on the advice of surf forecasting guru Spike from www.wavescape.co.za

– There is a 48-hour heads-up call, and a 24-hour green light call. When the contest is called on, invited surfers from all over the country have to start flying in or driving in to get to the New Pier in Durban by 6am on the day. It’s a fairly short window, and should they not get there in time they will forfeit their spot to one of the alternates.

– The contest has jetski assist for all and guaranteed excellent surf conditions – usually the day of the year at new Pier, Durban, arguably one of the best beachbreaks in the world.

– The entry into the Cell© Goodwave is one Rand per surfer, and the prize for first place is R100,000. This is the biggest first prize on the domestic surfing circuit.

– The competition will be hosted at California Dreaming overlooking New Pier on the Durban beachfront, with perfect viewing access for judges, commentators, attending media upstairs, and a safe place for the surfers downstairs.

– The South African Surfing Legends will present the event, and Jason Ribbink will be the contest director.

Barry Wolins from South African Surfing Legends has been hard at work at getting this event back on it’s feet, and is confident that it will be a resounding success. “I’m really proud of the fact that we managed to resurrect this contest,” said Wolins. “It’s the most exciting event on the domestic surfing calendar. With the South African Surfing Legends behind it we have a good team to run a world-class tournament. Big thanks to Cell© for coming on board and sponsoring the competition.”

“We’re very pleased to be involved with such an event,” said Wayne Merris from Cell©. “It is very unique in the world of surfing, and we’re confident that Cell©’s involvement with the contest will be long and fruitful.”

If you feel you should be considerd as a competitor for the Cell© Goodwave, send your entry request along with an image, a video clip or some words as to why you should be considered to info. All entries will be posted on the Goodwave Facebook page, so please ensure that you have the necessary permissions for accompanying imagery and video.

The selection criteria and process is at the discretion of the event organisers, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Five More Surfers Announced For JBU Supertrial Presented By RVCA

Five More Surfers Announced For JBU Supertrial Presented By RVCA

Jeffreys Bay – The next 5 surfers invited to the JBU Supertrial have been announced, and they have an admirable mix of surfing proficiency, flair and hard-earned Supers stripes. The contest organisers look for surfing skills in their invitee list, but experience and knowledge of surfing Supertubes is advantageous for an invite into this prestige event.

This round of invitees however, also includes some of the young blood coming through the surfing ranks in South Africa, where exuberance and passion sits alongside experience and where free-spirited surfing also becomes a box to be ticked by the contest organisers.

“The JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA has always been about having one of the best waves in the world, and about the fact that we want the best surfers in the country to be in attendance,” said JBU Surf Club Chairman Arthur Joubert. “It is therefore important that these surfers have a decent track record at Supers.”

Dale Staples was a quarter-finalist at JBay in 2012, taking out John John Florence en route to that big result and is always a stand out on any good day at the break. His inclusion was a certainty, as well as that of World Qualifying Series competitor Beyrick De Vries.

Umhlanga surfer De Vries has impressed many over the years as a fierce competitor with a good arsenal of air moves as well as a confident big wave game. He will be a serious threat should the surf be solid for this event.

Shane Sykes from Salt Rock was the team captain for the 2015 South African Junior Surfing Team that competed in California in the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, where he was the highest placed South African in the U18 Boys Division. He calls Supers one of his favourite waves, and heads on down whenever he can to meet a JBay swell.

Natural footed Sebastian Williams was crowned the 2015 Quiksilver King Of The Groms, and is part of the new crew represented in this event. With a steady Big Match Temperament and loads of Supers experience, Sebastian could turn heads at this event.

The lone goofy-footer out of the crew, JBay surfer Joshe Faulkner has excellent local knowledge out at the Supers line-up which he will no doubt use to his advantage. Joshe has that sought-after track record at Supers, surfing out there in his backyard whenever there is a swell around.

With only 20 surfers invited into the event, there are only 5 slots remaining. Surfers invited so far are in no particular order:
Ricky Basnett, Calvin Goor, Mikey February, Slade Prestwich, Ryan Payne, Shaun Payne, Matt McGillivray, Dylan Lightfoot, Davey Van Zyl, Sean Holmes, Dale Staples, Beyrick De Vries, Shane Sykes, Sebastian Williams and Joshe Faulkner.

The waiting period for the JBU Supertrial is 1-12 June, with one full day needed to surf the event to completion.

The JBU Supertrial forms part of the JBay Winterfest, the sporting and music festival that will take place in Jeffreys Bay from 6-17 July.

The JBU Supertrial is presented by RVCA. Co-sponsors include Monster Energy, Stance, and Oakley.

Surfing: Future Legends Final Event Great Success: Goor Wins JBU Supertrial Wildcard

Surfing: Future Legends Final Event Great Success: Goor Wins JBU Supertrial Wildcard

Durban, Saturday 19 March – Promising conditions at the New Pier in Durban saw event organizers move the final Future Legends Coaching Series event across to New Pier from the Dairy Bowl. It was a great decision, as the waves improved throughout the day with the growing tide, and the invited surfers all put in their best efforts.
After a sobering Friday night presentation on Sponsorship by surf industry stalwart Gary Green, the surfers were all determined to vindicate their inclusion into the series to the South African Surfing Legends. With a many-tiered coaching system in place, the surfers were put through their paces throughout the day, with surf and heat coaching, video review and analysis, skateboard correction and stretching and other physical conditioning techniques, all under the guidance of South African Surfing Legends Simon Nicholson, Paul Canning, Spider Murphy and Jason Ribbink to name a few.“This is not a surf contest,” said coach Bruce Jackson. “It’s a coaching day, using contest structures as a platform. We’re here to coach and motivate, educate and inform these surfers, and the best way to do this is to have them surf heats for us.”
In the U13 Boys division, a very stoked young Luke Thompson showed good form and marked improvement throughout the day, making it to the final in his division. Alex Townsend was also surfing tight, along with the stylish Mitch Du Preez. The division however, belonged to James Ribbink on the day as he took out the final at his home break.
“Over the three events all the surfers have shown improvement,” said head judge Jono Hutchison. “It’s clear that they have understood what is expected of them, worked towards their goals and have made steps forward, which is what this coaching series is all about.”
The U16 Girls division also showed great advancement, with the girls surfing to contest criteria and upping their games in heat conditions. Kayla Nogueira fought her way into the final, along with Olivia Izzard and Anna Jellema-Butler, but the polished Kirsty McGillivray took first honours.
In good New Pier conditions, the U16 Boys final was an exciting affair, with all four surfers catching a multitude of waves. Koby Oberholzer failed to clinch the better waves and struggled to find his rhythm, while Luke Slijpen and Calvin Goor both showed flashes of brilliance. This heat however, belonged to Angelo Faulkner, who was on every good set, and showing some committed surfing.

The series winners of the three divisions all received an invite to attend a course at the High Performance Surfing Academy. These series winners are:

“I’m over the moon to win the wildcard into the JBU Supertrial,” said an elated Goor on hearing the news. “It is all I have dreamed of. To be able to paddle out at Supers with three other guys is going to be amazing. The Future Legends Coaching Series has been amazing for me as well. I used to know the judging criteria, but not fully understand it, and the Legends coaches have clearly explained it to me, and told me how to make it work during heat conditions, so I feel like I have a massive advantage now.”

The Future Legends Coaching Series has been a very unique concept in the realms of inspirational surf coaching in South Africa, and can only be deemed a resounding success.
The South African Surfing Legends’ High Performance Surfing Academy is set to become the benchmark for surf coaching in the country. Watch the media for further announcements.

Joburg:
On Saturday 22 August at 1pm they will be having a skate jam with the local kids in the community indoor skatepark in Maboneng on 11 Staib Street. Josh Enslin To Attempt Guinness World Record For Surfing Marathon

Josh Enslin To Attempt Guinness World Record For Surfing Marathon

Port Elizabeth – His family thinks he’s crazy, but Port Elizabeth surfer Josh Enslin is determined in his bid to smash the Guinness World Record for the longest surfing marathon. The current record, set by Ben Shaw (USA) is 29 hours 27 minutes and was set on 30-31 August 2014.

Josh Enslin To Attempt Guinness World Record For Surfing Marathon

Enslin’s attempt is set to take place at Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth, and the waiting period for the attempt is going to be the month of November 2015.

“I am stoked to give the World Record an attempt,’ said Enslin. ”It would be rad to have the World Record Title on our South African shore line.”

There are a variety of things that come into play with such an attempt, with dehydration, fatigue, sharks and hyperthermia just the start. Still, Enslin is gung-ho on the attempt.

“I am super excited, anxious and nervous all in one,” said Enslin.  “The oceans’ elements play the factor here. It will be all about keeping a good balance but that’s hard when mother nature is in control. I have nothing to prove to anyone, this is just between me and the ocean and my longest surf session ever.”

The attempt is not only about personal glory, but also a charity drive for a number of worthy causes in and around the PE area.

“The other aspect to the event will be a massive donation drive alongside the record attempt,” said Enslin. “We will be gathering and donating old surf equipment and old wetsuits and blankets and canned food that Cyoh Surf Club will donate to underprivileged surfers around our surf community, and we will be donating blankets and canned food to the street children of Port Elizabeth.”

The support for his World Record attempt has been massive thus far, and Enslin would like to thank the following for their support:
