No End To The Sardines By Kevin in The Transkei

No End To Sardines by Kevin in Qora

No End To The Sardines By Kevin in The Transkei

No End To The Sardines By Kevin in The Transkei: Kevin checks in!

Howzit chaps this is Kevin at Qora Mouth
just north of Mazeppa Bay in the Southern Transkei
well the netting is going on fast and furious in KZN
um you’ll see
by the stills that are on the screen right now
how big these nets are guys
this is like major haul of sardines
and it’s probably due to the predator activity
uh
we’ve seen some vids of just bronze whales everywhere
gorging themselves on these sardines
so what happens is that
if there’s a bigger shoal moving through
these predators
just start fracturing it into little bays
and then um
they get very close to the shore
and when these kind of bait balls happen
close to the shore
those netters have the perfect opportunity
just to surround that whole bait ball and grab it all
so yeah wonderful news for the netters
and wonderful news for the public
because you can bet that the price per crate
is gonna come down drastically
over the next week or so if this goes on
and we can move a little bit uh
south now uh
into the Eastern Cape um
yesterday huge shoals around the Cintsa area again
so they’ve moved away from PE
they’ve moved through East London
they’re at Cintsa right now um
you can see the video with the dolphins
and the birds diving uh
that’s a big shoal chaps
and this is shoals that are coming behind
what’s already in case
it in so yeah
and I can also say that where I’m sitting here
in the Southern Transkei
a shoal moved past um about 5 kilometers out
it looks like it’s about a kilometer long shoal
which is big shoal uh
thousands of birds diving on it
and it’s already out of sight
I mean it’s literally gone around the corner
within about an hour
hour and a half so they are moving extremely fast um
probably due to 0 current um
we very seldom get these kind of favourable conditions
in in the southern Transkei
normally the current screaming but um yeah
it’s died right down um
there’s a slight south Westerly blowing uh
which means the surface of the water
is also moving against the current
so those sards are right on the surface
and they’re booking it north
so yeah I’d say
Port St Johns could probably
expect sardines over the next uh
24 hours to 48 hours probably
this shoal that’s by me is gonna stick to the coast now
um because the water is sitting out about 18 degrees
which is fine for them
remember the last shoal moved out deep after uh port um
after East London because the water was too warm
but this shoal has found cooler water
so they’re staying in close
that’s good news for the guys that are with sitting um
in Port Saint Johns
waiting to dive with their clients on these bait balls
so it should reach there and yeah
it’s game on guys
I think the mother lode is still to come to KZN
I don’t think it’s over until the lady sings
and she hasn’t sung yet so yeah
good things coming it’s a bumper year about to happen
so yeah keep it real guys and remember
keep give those netters a lot of space
if you’re down there watching them
um it’s not easy work and it’s actually dangerous work
so give them space look for a distance and um
we’ll keep you updated as things change cheers

MORE SARDINES Coming by Kevin in Qora

More Sardines Coming

MORE SARDINES Coming by Kevin in Qora

MORE SARDINES Coming by Kevin in Qora: Kevin weighs in with a wide perspective of the 2025 Sardine Run…

Welcome back to the Sardine News
morning everyone
this is Kevin at Qora Mouth
just north of Mazeppa Bay in the Southern Transkei
well the netting’s going on
uh lots of nets coming out all over KZN
we’ve heard about a couple coming out
even in Amanzimtoti
so they’re about to round the Bluff
and come into the Durban Beachfront
anytime now and still lots going on down Rocky Bay
Pennington so
the whole of the south coast is inundated with sardines
probably a bigger shoal that’s splintered up now
and they’re kind of caught in those little bays
predators are keeping them contained
and there’s a gorge fest going on with the predators
what we can also say right now today
is that there’s another huge shoal
just coming through Port Edward
um very promising for the continued netting in KZN
and what I can tell you from the Eastern Cape
is that there was a huge shoal about four days ago
probably sitting off of PE
which is now moved up to East London area
and lots of sods still on the way
so let’s hope this shoal from PE
that’s now in East London
doesn’t move out deep and I get to actually witness it
as it comes past me here but as we know
the last show went out deep
and came back in at Port Edwards
so yeah
that’s what we got guys
uh we’ll keep you updated as things progress cheers

Sardine Run 2025 Explained by Kevin in Qora

Sardine Run 2025 Explained by Kevin

Sardine Run 2025 Explained by Kevin in Qora

Sardine Run 2025 Explained by Kevin in Qora: thank you Kevin!

Morning chaps
this is Kevin at Qora Mouth
just north of Mazeppa Bay in the Southern Transkei
well well
well the sardine run is definitely underway
netting going on already in Southern K
Z N started with Port Edward yesterday
and they’re moving up the coast a bit
uh we saw all the netting boats
standing around at Saint Mike’s
this morning which was a little bit north of uh
Port Edward
and they’re just looking and waiting and watching
um nets went out this morning at sandspit
and so those sardines are actually moving up the coast
albeit a little bit slowly
but that’s okay
there’s lots more sardines coming behind them
and I think you know
if we if we just discuss what’s happened so far
we have hindsight right now
2020 vision um
the sardines were down off east London as we know
then they moved to Cintsa
and then they disappeared off the radar
now normally
every year
I get the sards coming straight past the front of me
a kilometre out I saw nothing
the only thing I had to go on was the gannets
because every morning
the gannets leave their roost wherever they were
and they travel up the coast or down the coast uh
because they know where the sards are
and they were all booking it north of me
so what actually happened here
is that the sardines jumped out deep
because there was warm water in front of them
and they moved past me
probably out right where the continental shelf is
they probably wouldn’t go off the shelf
but our shelf here is about 19 KS out
so they were out there deep and they moved past
and yeah they’ve come in at KZN
strange how things work out
so what we can expect now chaps
is that these uh sardines are gonna move up the coast
and there’s lots more backing them up
I’m seeing lots of birds going north still
so there’s still lots of sardines out deep
we had a big shoal that moved through east London
about three days ago and that’s out deep
it’s uh
they’re moving in a very
very low current and they’re moving north cool
so um yeah
that’s what we got guys that’s what we got for now
but um
let’s keep watching and um
let’s hope it’s a bumper year for the netters there
please just another reminder
keep well clear of the nets
if you’re there in the morning watching them
um it’s dangerous work and it’s their job and um
tempers get a little bit flared
if the public get a little bit too close
so give them their space uh
watch from a distance and um
keep it real let’s have fun cheers

That’s all for the Sardine Run 2025 Explained by Kevin!

Sardines in Port Shepstone

Sardines in Port Shepstone

Sardines in Port Shepstone

Sardines in Port Shepstone: yup, right NOW 07h30 nets are in!

It is a difficult place to access, there is a gravel/sand track to the beach. You need to come in from Durban side, along the old road, just before the closed Umzimkulu Bridge, there is a turn to the right (Port Shepstone Country Club), then turn left onto the dirt immediately and travel to the end.

DO NOT PARK ANYWHERE NEAR THE MUD! On the right as you get to the end of the road, do NOT go in there.

Your car will go down to the bottom. It is a dangerous place for carpark sharks, too.

PLUS, there are earthmoving machines trying to renegotiate the course of the river to the sea. So that they can try and fix the errant pylon that has stopped the traffic over the bridge completely.

Crazy days on the Sandspit!

SARDINES in KZN Today?

SARDINES in KZN Today

SARDINES in KZN Today?

SARDINES in KZN Today? Head south to see if you can find your very own pocket of sardines to chase. There are going to be splintered shoals all over the place, and often these small shoals of sardines get caught on the inside as the tide drops. Today is a perfect day for that to happen with a good, strong high tide early in the morning. That goes all the way out until noon. Dropping 1.1m in total, we are just our of spring tides and heading to neaps.

Places where this sardine trap can spring are generally long points with a cove-like beach. That the sardines can easily access at high tide as they are trying to escape from the sharks and things that are trying to eat them all up.

I have it on very high authority
that those sardines are right around the corner
can’t tell you much more than that
it’s just that there are plenty
plenty sardines coming
it turns out that when the current backs off
the Agulhas Current like it did the last couple of days
the sardines can put foot
and they come flying through on the
up the inside so yeah
KZN this weekend
just look out for all the cars and try avoid the chaos
there’s gonna be parking chaos
traffic chaos
there’s even gonna be sharks in the car park
trying to steal your fishing rods
while you chasing sardines on the beach
but watch out for all these things
and just try to be good behave
don’t leave litter behind and enjoy the scene
go for it get out there
I’ll see you on the beach
