Dodging Tuna and Meeting the Taxman in Sodwana Bay: Heading out past backline off Sodwana Bay on the legendary Seevarkie is always an education. Captain Lynie runs this floating battleship with minimum heavy-duty 50-pound gear that handles whatever the ocean throws at it.
We tried to dodge the massive yellowfin tuna working KwaZulu-Natal waters right now—fish pushing well past the 30-kilo mark—and slipped into the shallows for a quiet wahoo or couta. Instead, the ocean had other plans.
With 7 rods out, the old International 30 screaming, and Zoltan locked in a brutal tug-of-war, the water suddenly lit up electric blue. A phenomenal strike as the fish rocketed into the air like a stray torpedo or something. But it doesn’t take long for the taxman steps in. We salvaged half the meat, and marinated wahoo on the braai tasted incredible.
The next day, the crew ran a MYDO lure in the shallows. The rod doubled over on a hefty potato bass that safely went back home after a quick lecture from Zoltan about taking my lures.
