Where are these Sardines Now 27 July 2026 Sardine Update #kzn #sardinerun2026 #sardinenews: Today’s Sardine News is brought to you by Orcas at Sunwich Port — a reminder that the run is still in full swing. Sardines, as always, arrive in waves: compact shoals rolling one after another, each distinct yet part of the greater migration.
Bruce and I saw it firsthand in the Transkei — multiple shoals tightly packed, separate concentrations moving north. The early arrivals were modest, but the second wave grew larger, and the last shoals were massive, the biggest congregations yet. These shoals are still coming, likely pushing up from Mbotyi and beyond, while Coffee Bay has quieted down. Karl from Rock Coffee Café and Steve from Wild View confirm the birds have moved on, signaling the fish are shifting too.
A lekka cold front is stirring things up, cooling the inshore waters along the Agulhas Current. That’s the trigger sardines love, and it could send them surging again. Already, the first shoal passed Umhlanga, and there’s speculation it might reach Umdloti, Mtunzini, or even Richards Bay?! If so, the North Coast could be buzzing soon.
But the real focus is on the big shoals that lingered at Coffee Bay, Umdumbi, and Injela. With the birds now chasing north, Amanzimtoti looks promising, though Port Edward could also light up. The only way to know is to be up before dawn, eyes on the surf.
On the North Coast, I’ve got Alan, Greg, and Steve watching closely, ready to phone in sightings faster than any helicopter.
