Breaking Sardine Run Update – Qora Mouth, just north of Mazeppa Bay
Breaking Sardine Run Update – Qora Mouth, just north of Mazeppa Bay: Kevin reports live from the shoreline this morning with a massive shoal of sardines pushing through right in front of him.
“How’s it guys, this is Kevin at Qora Mouth… we’ve got a huge movement of sards coming through right now.”
From his vantage point, the shoal stretches across the bay, three to four kilometers long, shimmering under the surface. Thousands upon thousands of gannets are diving relentlessly, their lines of attack stretching far into the distance.
Interestingly, Kevin notes no dolphins in attendance yet – unusual for a shoal of this size – but the sheer number of birds makes up for it.
The sardines appear to be holding position for the past hour, not racing north just yet. A strong westerly wind is pumping, which should eventually help push them up the coast toward Durban in the coming days.
Kevin signs off with a promise to keep watch.
