These purpose built lures are targeted at Kob and Garrick and East London is where it’s at for these prized gamefish.
The MYDO Luck Shot Mini range (#1 and #2) also target shad and other shore and estuary caught fish.
There two types of Luck Shots. The Luck Shot Mini is designed for casting and trolling, whilst the Luck Shots, which are bigger and heavier, are designed to replace expensive swimming plug lures used for trolling, at under half the price.
The Luck Shot sizes 2 through 4, can be hauled at very high trolling speeds and are great for looking for bait whilst dragging Konas. They always hook the fish in the corner of the mouth in the top jaw. And with outsized hooks, pressure can be put on the fish. The Luck Shots do not damage the fish at all, compared to the twin treble arrangement offered by Rapalas and Halcos. With these type of configuration, the trebles almost every time damage the poor fish beyond repair, with a treble in the eye or gills. And they hook in the lower jaw as the hooks hang downwards of the lure. We all know that a fish hooked in the bottom jaw will never survive, either as a live bait, or as a candidate for tag and release. Fish singles. They are also so much easier to get out of the fish’s mouth.
The Luck Shots can also be slow trolled and the different sizes and weights mean you can fish the entire water column – watch out for those angry rockod!
Stuart can be contacted on stuart@spargs.co.za and Beacon Bay Spar is very easily found on the Beacon Bay road leading down to the beach.

Waterfall Bluff by Offshore Africa

Waterfall Bluff by Offshore Africa

Offshore Africa in Port St. Johns in the Transkei took to the skies to bring us this radical view of Waterfall Bluff, a few clicks north of their base in Port St. Johns.

Offshoreportstjohns.com have been operating on the Transkei Wild Coast for many seasons now. They offer many different adventures from river cruises on the Umzimvubu to ocean safaris and scuba diving.

But their biggest and most sought after adventure is undoubtedly The Sardine Run!

Each season Rob Nettleton and partner Debbie Smith take to the water and get right involved with the chaos that accompanies the sardines wherever they go. Dolphins, whales, seabirds, fish and of course… sharks.

Every shark with a smartphone knows about the annual breakaway of approximately a tenth of the southern oceans sardine population. This crazy shoal of adventuring sardines just leave the pack and head north into South African waters and get hammered on the way, literally to depletion.

Humans are also in on the action as limited netting is allowed.

But the real action is underwater as baitball after baitball form in a desperate attempt to escape being eastern by something. The birds start from the top, and the predator fish from the bottom until there is literally not one sardine from that baitball family left.

Rob invariably has his camera rolling and captured the spectacle exceptionally well. Working with Rob and Debbie to get the video of your lifetime is a pleasure. Together they have ample experience and are committed to service excellence, attention to detail, and safety.

Casa Msika Bass by the Frenzy

Well she did it again. The Frenzy won the day today with her first ever large mouth bass. Check out the Magisto video in the previous Casa Mkisa Bass post.

She caught it on a Mydo Luck Shot #1 with a pearl white plastic minnow from McArthy.

The cute little fish falls about 4.5kgs short of the mark. Which in these waters is 5kgs!

Next stop Zimbabwe! And off to chase those Kariba tigers with the Mydo SS Spoon range. Stay tuned!

The Frenzy was determined to get the shot. A pin tailed wider, cheeky as ever, perched on a mooring pole a scant few metres away. As usual I was interfering with advice trying to get the silhouette shot against the broody grey Chimoio sky. She inadvertently listened and got a great picture. Next thing all hell broke loose. She was crouched down right next to an irate crocodile who took great exception to our blabbering and fuss. Luckily it was a baby, barely a metre, and this all went down right next to a sign warning of crocodiles!

Beware of the crocodiles, said the sign

Welcome to Casa Msika.
Chimoio. Central Mozambique.
We had just come back from our first attempt at what is unbelievably a 5kg or bigger, large mouth bass.

First attempt.
And the best thing about it, was that we had no idea where we were. We were actually having a fine time celebrating Murray Dawson’s 63rd birthday with bird blogger Paul Cook. They are old mates and this visit worked in perfectly with our medium term travel plans of crossing Africa. And so the three of us slowly realised that we were at Msika, part of the famous bass fishing hole, Lake Chicamba.
Casa Mesika is on the way to Zimbabwe from Chimoio. It is a classic fishing and holiday resort on the edge of the water. The huge hydro electrically inspired dam was created in 1954 and powers the entire area and beyond. But more importantly. It’s full of huge large mouth bass. Huge. They have a Casa Msika 5kg Bass club!!! Check the pics!!!

And so, after some true ex pat style celebration, which lasted well into the evening, we awoke to this amazing spectacle. The Frenzy hustled a canoe in no time and after some frantic tackle work, we headed down to the waters edge. Actually a great slipway that a few years ago was well underwater. The water level of the lake has been dropped whilst the power guys maintain some turbines. They will return the water level to it’s normal state when they are done working. But for now the bass must be more concentrated.
Well that was my thinking as I rigged a few sticks with Mydo Luck Shots, one with a Mydo SS Tarpon Flappa spoon, and one with a Mydo Buck Shot, especially for big bass. This lure swims amazingly life like, it looks and acts just like a baby bass or tilapia – the prevailing food stuff in the area. Change the fly to target different species.
But as of this article, it hasn’t happened yet. The locals slate the high all round air and water temperature as the problem. Traditionally these big fish feed better in the real cold. But that is not an excuse, we are out there again shortly…

RIP Murray Dawson. Murray passed away the day after his 63rd birthday, peacefully at Msika. He will be buried in Chimoio today 3pm.
