Stay at The Umzimkulu Marina
The Umzimkulu Marina on the south bank of the Umzimkulu River in Port Shepstone, KZN, South Africa has been hosting fisherfolk and families, travelling business people, wedding parties and international travellers, for over a decade now.
Wake to fish eagles calling and watch as they circle high above the nature reserve opposite, scanning the waters for fish. Of which there are plenty. The river teems with fry and tiny anthropods and crustaceans – essential foods for growing river snapper, grunter, kingfish, garrick, kob, perch, zambezi shark – the kind of fish anglers dream about.
Fishing is well catered for with a 26ft river cruiser that we fish the river with, and cruise down to the mouth area, where we can fish both the ocean and the estuary. There is fabled deep-sea fishing to be had in these parts and when conditions permit, The Niteshift, a 24ft walkaround cat with twin Yamaha 60 4 -strokes, and skippered by veteran Brian Lange, is always raring to go. Accommodation
The first unit, alongside the slipway and farthest from the main cluster, sets the tone with an outside braai area overlooking the river, a well-equipped kitchenette, lounge and tv, with a single downstairs, and a double with lovely view upstairs.
The second is similar but bigger and can take 4 people with a bunk down and double bed upstairs. Spacious and versatile.
Number three is a smaller but thrilling to be in, little unit, built mainly in wood. It usually has a semi-permanent family member up there, but if it’s available, grab it!
Four has two bedrooms and a bunk, and can handle families and large groups of up to 6.
Number five is the go for larger groups, it can be configured to sleep up to 6 as well.
All have river frontage – the boats, paddle boat and canoes moored at the jetty, use by arrangement with management. You can bring your own boat or craft, provided it is licenced and you follow the rules.
Parking is off the street and safe, we have a regiment of Jack Russells and Ridgebacks for security. The establishment is well staffed with experienced staffers and all expected amenities.
Rates start at R350pp with deals available for groups/whole units. Kids under 12 half price. Weddings and functions catered for with 100 man tent in beautiful garden area with ablutions and cooking area.
