Sardines in Durban and Shelley Beach 11 am 23 June 2023
Sardine Run 2024 Sunday 10 AM 23 June. Sardines in Durban and Shelley Beach: right through this lovely low tide we will be getting shoals caught on the inside. And within reach of both netters. And the public.
For this type of situation to arise we need a long beach with a proper channel running along parallel to the backline. These are good examples:
As the waves and predators push the sardines in towards the shore, some of them make it over the backline sandbank and into the inside channel. These channels can be quite deep and can hold a lot of sardines. This is when the shad move in and annihilate the sards.
Sharks too! They are ever-present even if you can’t see them, they are there. Rather don’t take any chances and stay right in the shallows with your eyes peeled. These sharks get so crazy at times like this, that they inadvertently beach themselves.
On a day like today when the sardine fever is running here, criminals come out to take advantage. Many rods and reels and all sorts go missing during the chaos of catching sardines. Take extra care and don’t leave anything unattended to.
Have a great Sardine Day!
