Description
MYDO StripBaitSwimmer
The tried and tested MYDO StripBaitSwimmer concept comes from decades ago. The fillet bait, or strip-bait, has a long and traditional history.
In this modern form, we have super-shiny dusters and beautiful little prismatic baitswimmer heads to make up a highly attractive version of this tried and tested offering.
Drape a fresh and juicy sardine or bonito fillet down the trace, and tie it on good with cotton or wax thread. Drag it around the ocean at any speed you like. From an absolute slow crawl on a kayak, up to 9 knots or more when necessary. Will never spin or let you down. At these higher speeds however, you may want to check and change your fillet more often. Or use a really tough-skinned fish like a bonito. Bonito belly shine might just be the very best you can throw out there.
They come with a wire trace and can be seen mainly as a surface bait. Although on the drift the half ounce will go down quite nicely.
These little guys also handle smaller whole baits like red-eye sardines, maasbanker and even sprats.
How to fish the MYDO StripBaitSwimmer
There are a bunch of ways to fish this super attractive and shiny rig. The MYDO StripBaitSwimmer can be fished with or without bait. It is rigged heavy for big fish. Double wire to the treble. Number 6. But it does not make any sound (resonance) since the load is so very light on the trace. And at higher speeds the wire is not even visible (or audible) at all.
- Slow troll with a fillet bait: this is how to catch big couta – they love this reasonably small but well-presented bait. Go as slow as possible really. The fillet will hang about a metre or less from the top. This is the hot zone!
- Billfish speed without bait – just stick it out there, 7 knots or more, is also the best way to catch Queen Mackerel. The lure comes right up on top and stays there. Making a helluva disturbance as it stays right on top.
- Billfish speed with bait: pay attention to Step 3 below.
The MYDO StripBaitSwimmer is rigged as follows:
- Prepare a juicy and flashy piece of fillet bait. It can be a sardine fillet, which is legendary. Or a strip of a bonito belly. Belly shine! You could also hook some squid on there.
- Lift the duster up the trace to reveal the top hook. Hook on the fillet (some people like to put the fillets on backwards because of that lekker strong little section of skin right at the tail).
- If you have the time (sometimes you just don’t), then put a bit of cotton around the bait and hook too. To fish this rig really fast though you need to cotton some baits or they drag off. Bonito belly will hold on just fine, it’s so tough. Preferred bait for this rig is a bonito belly shine. Fast or slow.
The MYDO StripBaitSwimmer is a multi-talented rig that is really inexpensive. Also, you tend to hook faster fish with it, the faster you go – couta and wahoo jump on these things! You got to hear that ratchet when we are going 9knots and get whacked by a screaming couta! They are great bait catchers, very simple to use and all tunas will take one, with or without bait.

The MYDO StripBaitSwimmer is an excellent idea on the kayak. Check this crocodile couta caught by Justin Campbell on the exact lure pictured – just recently, on the 27 November 2020. This fish was part of two, taken on the same day, that were definitely, without doubt, the first two couta of the season. Jonno Gouws, also pictured, was the first one to get his fish on this epic day, and so got the yellow lifejacket.
We made this epic day out into a kind of video which you can watch here and is definitely worth the laugh as Justins rod screams whilst on the phone to his lady!
Justin and Jonno will both have GoPros next time!
