Hunting gamefish on the KZN South Coast (per week option)
Hunting gamefish on the KZN South Coast with the Mydo crew. Options include day charters and week-long total experiences.
The KZN South Coast has long been a favourite fishing holiday destination for tourists both local, and from abroad.
Our jagged reef topography and close proximity to the continental shelf and it’s huge canyons means we have a diverse range of species to chase after.
Billfish swing by in the wet season – hot and humid, with water temperatures going right over 26 degrees celsius. Dragging Konas up and down the shelf puts us in the running for both blues and black marlin, as the depth ranges from black friendly 80 metres, and down to a handy 600m and more in no time – where the blues swim. Zig-zagging along this shelf is how marlin fishing great – Captain Bobby Rolfe, caught so many good marlin, all those years ago. His boat – the Happy Hooker, inspired many to go out there and catch their dream fish.
Big ‘couta (king mackerel) and their little cousin the queen mackerel, also arrive early in the year. And as we move into the dry winter season, the winter gamefish come a-knocking. Amberjack, yellowtail and tuna become our target species.
It’s mainly heavier tackle, 50lb and up to 80lb. Which can be doubled for billfish and serious gamefish like the inimitable amberjack and yellowtail. And yellowfin tuna. Which, by the way, have been coming out at over 100kgs – on the odd occasion! Very far out to sea though – like 40nm! Let’s goooooo!
But out there anything can happen. Commercial longliners from China and Japan, ply these waters non-stop, legally, for bluefin tuna! Southern Bluefin to be exact – the same population that they experience visiting in New Zealand. Yes, the same ones! They don’t get to the amazing sizes of the Atlantic Bluefin across the pond, but 1000lb fish are available.
We fish live bait but catch all-sorts along the way. Luckily we get a good serving of bonito species, tunas and skipjack (all tunas btw). These are our staple live bait diet, along with smaller mackerel and shad we can catch in the shallows on our way out back. We fish as part of the Oceanographic Research Institute’s tagging program, but we will bring back a fish to eat, on occasion. Especially a fresh dorado or yellowfin tuna!
All our tackle is supplied by Mydo Fishing – you can learn all about Mydos and the Mydo fishing system – right here.
