Whale Watching
Whale Watching with The Sardine team: There isn’t too much more thrilling than getting up close and personal with the giants of Africa. And humpback whales are certainly qualified giants. Southern Rights too. Bryde’s Whales also make giant status. And, we get Killer Whales every now and then. In amongst the dolphins and other cetaceans.
We have been safely conducting whale watching and research trips for decades. Up and down the Eastern seaboard of Southern Africa. Whale watching can be a fun and tricky business!
These huge mammals seem to have lost their fear of humans and their boats over this time, and it is not uncommon for whales to approach our boats these days. Although this can be really cool, it does pose new threats and challenges when embarking on whale encounters.
Experience counts for everything in these scenarios.
Jump in
Oh yeah! This seems to be the in thing to do these days! There are rules in place to protect the animals, and YOU! But a reasonably close encounter with a marine animal this size is worth getting wet for.
Season
The Eastern Seaboard of Southern Africa comes alive with humpback whales every winter. Arriving in about April, they stick around right into November or so. An especially good time to rock up would be June or July, the expected arrival of the annual sardine run, as millions of sardines make their way north along the longest gauntlet on the planet.
Areas
We have the Umzimkulu Marina option in Port Shepstone, South Africa. Giving us quick access to the waters from Durban to the Wild Coast. Many other launch sites up and down the coast.
And in Mozambique, Inhambane Province, we have the many choices on offer up there, between Maputo and the Bazaruto Archipelago and its beautiful islands.
Accommodation
Accommodation options are luxury tents and chalets. Up and down the coast. We will put you where the sardines are!
So get in touch with Sean on umzimkulu@gmail.com or WhatsApp +27793269671, if this is something you always wanted to do. Get a group together to help bring costs down, ideally, 6 or 8 really works.
Boats
We have many boats to choose from. To suit your group exactly, depending on numbers and the equipment you will be bringing along. RIBs and deep-sea sportfishing boats are on the menu. Aswell as some smaller craft ideal for smaller groups (minimum 2).
