Azanian Rebel by Robi van Wyk

Azanian Rebel by Robi van Wyk: A letter from New York. RobI, a war resister running from the South African army is sitting in his refugee home in holland as he opens the letter. Thinking back to when he was in exile in New York, he remembers all the fellow African refugees he sat with, and all the political intrigue and lies that he dealt with there. He remembers all the beautiful people who helped him in his struggle, a struggle for truth and rights.
He is shocked to read that three young men have been arrested for his brother’s murder. He knows that his brother’s murder was a political assassination, and he has the proof. He rushes to the American embassy, but due to the fact that he still has not been granted refugee status in Holland, the Americans deny him a visa and he can’t attend the court case.
He is totally distraught, but continues his struggle, and joins the band of his childhood friend who is also a refugee in Holland. They play all the demonstrations against apartheid, raising awareness and money for the struggle. It is not only fun but fruitful, and Apartheid is destroyed.
“This is good” thinks RobI, “At last, my brothers’ blood fell not in vain”.
Mandela gets elected as president, and eventually RobI returns to his homeland, feeling triumphant. Something is wrong though, his homeland is still called South Africa, albeit “New”. Morocco is not called North Africa, nor is Tanzania called East Africa, nor Ghana called West Africa, they all have names.
“Who and where am I?”
My nation is drunk, drunk on freedom, a freedom that is an illusion. All that RobI can see that has changed, is that racism is no longer institutionalised.
The government, though mostly a different colour, is still doing the same ‘Business as usual’, looking after friends and family, while Africa’s’ riches are still being ripped off by foreign companies and governments, and Africans still live in poverty. RobI realises the revolution has not happened, Azanians are still rebels, longing for true change and true unity. The dream of Azania, the dream of a united Africa is still but a dream. Only if all of Africa unites, will Africa be free. Right now, there are forces that are sowing dissention amongst African countries, instigating wars between neighbours and financing terror. The truth is plain to see, it is a time to decide.
People of Africa, people of the world, do not let your governments do wrong, we must stand up together and be listened to. RobI calls for Ubunye, the Zulu chant for Unity…..The Azanian Rebel’s cry !
