Great shad fishing bite on for KZN
Driving down the old South Coast road on shad patrol yesterday was very rewarding and entertaining.
At Umkomaas, the north bank was lined with spinning guys working the nice deep high tide channel that brings the blue winter warm water right to the shore. On the south side, the jetty like shad fishing platform was awash with the huge swells that just came up yesterday. With anglers clinging on by their toes (very dangerous btw).
Carparks at Rocky Bay and surrounds were alive with action and the good old smell of bait.
At Port Shepstone into the dark anglers were having a blast with the just over sized (30cm) delicious shad. Some live bait sticks were out back as usual, anglers searching for the elusive kob in the night time. It has been rather quiet on the kob front – which is usual as they sardines first make landfall. Deep sea fishing has also been a bit on the slow side – albeit some nice hauls of geelbek made by commercials. And plentiful bait – shad and mackerel.
The other favourite spots all the way to Port Edward have also been visited by the sardine hungry shad, and down into the Transkei they are staple diet of humans and fish alike right now!

These spoons swim differently with different retrieves – but the one you want for the shad, is a nice steady but slow retrieve. This really gets the spoon swimming in a languid side to side action – that the shad love. A keel on the spoon prevents it from spinning. The light stainless steel 316 material makes for a fluttering, bouncy and springy vibe – full of action – bouncing over rocks and obstacles much better than lead or alloy spoons. Lateral line holes make for a beautiful comet-like bubble trail when cranked on the surface, and make for huge casts as the holes allow the air right through.
