Adam Kamdar in the Morning!

Sardines and Conditions Report

Good morning. It’s 7 a. m. on Friday the 28th of June 2024. Here’s your view of the tide chart. As you can see, it’s just past sunrise, so we’ll have a good view of the sun coming up. The next high tide is in about an hour, and the next low tide is around 2 p.m. According to Winguru, We will get some northeasterly winds in the afternoon, but still a very fishable day.

And the forecast for the weekend is absolutely stunning, with very low swells and very little wind around. Tides for fishing shows at current, hardly any wind and, air temperature 16 degrees. Air pressure at the moment is 1028. The wave net shows a water temperature above 21 degrees, so pretty warm for the sardines to arrive in Durban.

Let’s let’s watch and see how this progresses. Sardines last netted in the Kingsborough Ilovo area, so not not far from Durban. Next stop, Amanzimtoti, Isipingo Beach. There’s been some shoals spotted off the Bluff. And let’s hope they arrive in Durban soon. Next will be the sunrise view. And that’s such a magical view of our Durban’s Golden Mile.

Flocks of birds on the beachfront. Not the type that are diving on the sardines, but apparently there are lots of shoals coming past. A friend went out to sea yesterday and he says there are shoals just outside the harbour entrance. But this is probably sugar mackerel and red-eye sardine, not the nettle sardine.

So what we want to see is the cormorants and gannets coming through and dive bombing, and the dolphin activity that’s associated with the sardine run as well. Then we’ll know that those are the real sardine shoals. But it’s been pilot shoals so far. I believe the main shoals are on their way. Some are far out to sea.

So when pieces of that shoal breaks off and comes closer to shore, we’ll have lots of action. Just have to wait for the water temperature to drop, then we’ll see action on the Durban beachfront. Stay tuned to thesardine.co.za.
