Umzimkulu Estuary Fishing

Umzimkulu Estuary Fishing

Umzimkulu Estuary Fishing: Target gamefish in the Umzimkulu Estuary in Port Shepstone.

A quick hour south of Durban! Along one of the most beautiful rods on the fishing planet.

Wintertime

This still healthy and heaving river swells and drains with the tides that push hard through the narrow Umzimkulu River mouth. Flushing it in and out and carrying with it all kinds of fish, bait and organisms.

It is still very clean in the dry season (winter) months.

Livebait is easily caught or netted, and is the best plan for hunkering down for the evening. We have a 28ft Cat with plenty space and cover, an ideal fishing platform.

Don’t miss a frame!

The big excitement recently has been on artificial receently as the river has recovered from the floods completely. We have been having a great time trolling tiny lures and Mydo Luck Shots around the place. Kingfish have been marauding up and down past the mangrove associates looking for pockets of bait to ambush. Those big prawns with the pincers have been prolific and can be seen cruising around the mudflats in the winter clean water.

The odd Zambezi or big GT keeps us up at night with huge invisible explosions in the dark.

Summertime

In summer the water will go brown but it does not slow the fishing. Grunter, perch and rock salmon feed in the day and night in this water, you just got to get a decent live bait, or chuck out a sardine head with the guts hanging free for a good chance.

Use the link above or get in touch if you would like us to help you arrange your dream fishing holiday. We can fish the estuary and river. We can head down to the mouth and the sandspit. And if weather and waves play along, we may even be able to sneak you out to sea for a chance at the big ones.

Stay with us at the Umzimkulu Marina or pop in by appointment, for daytime sessions. More information at Umzimkulu Adrenalin. Food at The Port Captain or Fish on the River.

Contact Sean on 079 326 9671 or umzimkulu@gmail.com, to make an appointment with the fish…
