“I never fish on weekends” proclaims Luis Everitimo, as we enjoy a few coldies and a pizza down at Brankos, in the Tofo market.
Luis lives and fishes here in Inhambane, southern Mozambique. But never on weekends.
His career behind the decks puts him way out of service and sync with the ocean. Friday night heard Luis playing the show down the beach at Dino’s Beach Bar. With the metical at 5 to a Rand, South African tourist numbers are way on the up. Rum and raspberry stocks are in trouble.
So Luis slaves away all weekend. But come Monday. The Team Mydo angler sharpens his hooks, and is back out there before the sun. The pics feature only fish caught on Mydos. But Luis is not beholden to Mydo, unlike other sponsorships, he can use what he likes. And believes in. He fishes bait only. A master.
He catches a lot of fish. Releasing a few sailfish a season. Tussling with reef sharks and Zambezis daily. Luis has fished this coastline from Zavora to Pomene extensively.
Only takes a couple of fish each time.
After all, you can’t put that many fish on a ski! And without a motor, it’s the most honourable sport fishing craft afloat.
Paddle power!
