Busy times between Durban and Mozambique…

I’s just like the old days…queues of cars and people loaded with boats, quad bikes and jet skis, headed north, en masse. Winter holidays have begun.

Halfway stops between Maputo and Xai Xai are full.
Markets are a buzz.
Fuel stops are busy as.
Border posts are chaos.
And the roads very busy.
But we have just come through the Swqziland route without any problems bar a quick tyre change this morning.

The weather is playing ball now with a nice cold front just coming through promising smooth and glassy conditions for the next few days.

Inhambane and the other southern Mozambique provinces are a favorite destination with surfing, fishing and diving all readily available between them.

The last few days in Tofo…
A 3m Marlin was seen by an ocean safari crew along with a 9m whale shark at Clownfish Reef, a few hundred metres off shore.
Whilst Joe Mulder and his Port Shepstone crew have been shooting bigger couta and reporting the loss of a few spears and huge wahoo at Far Reef Barra.
This time of the year we get the bigger couta (sierra) and soon enough the bigger yellowfin and wahoo will start to appear.
Last week we saw many dolphins, two manta rays and too many humpback whales, they seem to be coming closer to the boats each year. Some days they are are hard to avoid!
Waves were surfed at Tofinho this week and the howling onshores gave the kitesurfers a chance to get flying too.

The ocean in Natal today looks great. As we head south through three countries to get to Umhlanga the odd peek reveals blue and calm waters. With waves on the way…and the crowds up in Mozambique…south was a good call…
