An out of the blue, 1 December, 31.7kg Couta off the rocks down in Port Edward starts the season with a huge explosion.
For us, on the Umzimkulu, even the Niteshift was turned back by the teeth of a pukka November/December beasterly easterly, this morning. Such a mean and dangerous wind – stirred up by the cyclonic systems prevailing up north right now.
But down in Port Edward, Craig at Tackle Den, reported in a monster couta taken with live bait, off the rocks, at first light! In the strong east wind. Just goes to show, the effort and endurance you have to deal with, when chasing these trophy fish. Details are scant at the moment, but aside from the monster couta coming out, the hammerheads were also going apey…as many as twenty hookups in the morning session.
And then…drum roll…
A confirmed 8.5kg Rock Salmon taken in the clear waters of the Umzimkulu, this week. The drought has made sure that even as of now, the clean water prevails. You can see prawns, crabs and fry swimming on the shallows. Another confirmed spotting of a Zambezi was recorded by the Niteshift. The shark was mercilessly harassing a mullet right on the surface!
So, no pics of either fish yet…as soon as we get them, so will you!
